Tailgating?...

Hi I'm boronte, from London, England.  I've just taken up a subscription to Taste of Home and have been looking through some of the posts and pages of this brilliant website.

I came across this page which talked about 'tailgating' which caught my eye.  http://www.tasteofhome.com/plus/2007/07_Jul/tailgating-tips.aspx   Can someone explain what it's all about?  In England, tailgating is when you drive too close to the car in front and look likely to cause an accident because you're either a) upsetting the car in front, or b) too close to stop without hitting the car in front if the car stops suddenly!

I keep asking questions I know, but it's fascinating for us over here to get an insight into life in another country apart from what we see on the news.  This is real life - as in proper everyday stuff, not just the major events that hit the headlines.  Thanks to you all for a great magazine and even more wonderful food and recipes!  And thanks also for the help!  Smile

Hello Boronte~

Tailgating means the same thing here...   BUT, we also do Tailgating before sports events and such.  BBQ, music, libations, just a party usually outside in the parking lot before the event.  (using the tailgate of the vehicle as a table.)  (sort of)  Hope this helps!

Hi Boronte,

More specifically, tailgating food can be fried chicken, chicken wings, wraps, cole slaw, cookies, sort of like picnic food. I went to my first one in October before a football game.

We brought sweet tea, water, lemonade, 2 liter sodas. How do you like America?

Tailgating can also be a HUGE deal at college football games. We have friends who have those tents like you would have for an outdoor wedding. The actually take one of  those and huge propane grill, and all the friends in the group that go to the games take turns supplying the beer, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. It's funny how outsiders from that group become best buddies with them and start participating. It just gets bigger and bigger and bigger! Personally, I'd rather stay home and watch a Lifetime movie.  :)

About boronte

I am an avid cook from Stevenage, a town just outside London, England. On holiday in Florida last year I picked up Taste of Home magazine when out shopping and loved it. I decided to subscribe and am enjoying all the different types of recipes you have on offer. The only thing I have to think about is the measures but nowadays with the internet and with such alot of interest in all things American over here it's not really a problem. Some of the ingredients can be hard to find though!
