Cravings

What foods do you crave? There is no heistation to my answer - chocolate. A close second would be cookies. If there is a cookie with chocolate within my arm's reach, look out! For some it might be freshly baked bread or salty snack foods, but for me, sweets take the cake (pun intended).

It's not uncommon for my husband and I to finish a great dinner at home followed by my, albeit childish, exclamation that I'd like a cookie. Most nights, that's all that it is - a statement that that's what I'd like because I try not to keep cookies or chocolate in the house. My willpower crumbles under the weight of, well, cookie crumbs, and neither would last very long.

For him it's cheese and bread with butter. To be more exact - Shullsburg cheese from Shullsburg, Wisconsin (his home town) - and if he had his choice (which he usually does) he'd go for Muenster.

Hi Peggy.  I'm with you I LOVE chocolate, however, it does not like me.  I am a diabetic and cannot have sweets.  Unfortunately, I have not been good at all and my blood sugar has crept up to bad numbers.  The doctor will put me on oral medication as soon as my bloodwork comes back later this week.

I am fond of Lindt chocolate bars as well as Belgium chocolate though I would kill for any good tasting chocolate.  I really need to learn how to have desserts that are diabetic friendly.  I love sweets period and know they are not good for me but am SO bad.

My x-hubby loved cheese and like to end a meal with slices of cheese and a dessert wine.  I do love cheese myself especially creamy havarti, Manchego cheese which is a Spanish cheese, and love Roquefort and a good blue cheese.  I am also fond of an English cheese that is a combo of cheddar and blue cheese, I can't seem to remember the name.

I have never heard of Shullsburg cheese.  What type of cheese is it?  Is it a mild white color cheese or similar to a cheddar?  I am most interested in hearing about it.

Nice to make your acquaintence Peggy.

Judimae-sounds like we are both chocolate lovers! Diabetes runs in my family (my mother has type I) so I am familiar with the struggle between indulging with sweets and staying healthy with normal blood sugar readings.

Shullsburg cheese is actually a brand name instead of a type of cheese. They used to make all of their cheese in-house in Shullsburg, Wisconsin but now I believe they mainly package cheese made off-site but keep the Shullsburg cheese name. They make a variety of cheese like pepper Jack, cheddar, Monterey Jack, Muenster, etc. I'm not sure how widely they are distributed; I wouldn't be surprised if it was just in the Wisconsin area.

Thanks for writing!

I can eat pizza anytime.......very hard for me to say no. But I guess I don't really "crave" it like I would a good cake donut or just about any kind of cookie.

Pizza is one of my favorites too! I grew up in the Chicago suburbs so good pizza is a way of life down there - deep dish pizza especially:-) I haven't been able to find a favorite pizza place near my home so I've been on the hunt for some good pizza recipes - especially crust recipes.

I did find one recently that I like a lot and have been making regularly since. I'll post it soon under my favorite recipes. It's a really simple recipe but I think the key is shaping it on parchment paper and baking it on a pizza stone - it makes for a crisp exterior with a slightly chewy interior. Since it makes 2, I like to let the dough rise, punch it down and freeze half for another time. That works out really well and is a great time saver.
