Healthy Cooking Plus

From the Editors of Healthy Cooking

Happy Thanksgiving!!

But it’s the middle of May, you say? Well, technically that’s true. Outside, spring has sprung – the grass is green once again and sidewalks are full of people out for a stroll. Also, it’s a balmy 52 degrees here in Wisconsin. But that’s outside. Inside, we’re gearing up for the holiday season.

Healthy recipes for Thanksgiving – that’s right, Thanksgiving – are being picked and tested. And of course we’re keeping you in mind; we want to help you get through the upcoming festivities without gaining a pound! Here, we’re laying out recipes for the October/November issue of Healthy Cooking, in which we’re planning a mix-and-match Thanksgiving spread. I guess you could say that this is our Thanksgiving buffet in May!

Healthy Cooking Photos

Oh, and there are tons of great foods…but I won’t spoil the surprise. At this point, your recipes have already been tested by our Test Kitchen pros and we’re deciding recipe placement in the magazine. We’re also planning hints, tips and extras to make your holiday a successful one. I would say that I can’t wait for autumn so you can try these delicious recipes, but that’s not exactly true.

With the lawnmower going by my window every couple of minutes, I’m reminded that indeed, spring is here, and I’m going to embrace it wholeheartedly! Thanksgiving can wait, especially since there are so many great summer recipes in our June/July issue! (Which we wrote around Christmas!)

You sold out. Taste of Home and Quick Cooking were promised to always be ad free. Not any more. The recipies were good home cooking. Not any more. Your cooking schools are all commercials advertising the products you are using. I' been subscribed to Taste of home almost since you had it. I did start with the first issue of Quick Cooking until it became Simply Delicious which really sucked.

Go back and look at the early magazines to see what you have done to them.  I've also subscribed to Reminise and Reminise Extra.

I, too, am very disappointed in the newer Taste of Home magazine. Why fix a good thing if it's not broken? The original ones were much, much more appealing... Mine is a gift every Christmas and I will tell my friend to cancel it, soon. It no longer appeals to me.  I am not referring to the ads as much as the smaller print, too much on a page, lesser quality paper, poorer photography, etc. Some of the better standbys were also dropped, such as, "Does anyone Have  this Recipe?"   I could go on and on.....

You changed the formula from a great magazine to a so so one.  I  no longer have a subscription (even though I had paid for it but no one at your magazine can seem to find my payment  and the check has cleared) and I am so disappointed with the new format that I'm not arguing.  Now I check your magazine at the supermarket and if it looks good, I buy it.  Mostly I pass it by.  Sorry!!!

I am greatly disappointed with the new format, also.  I have years of TOH magazines saved but when my subscription runs out, that is it for me.  This makes me sad because it was the only magazine I subscribed to for years, even though there are other magazines that come out monthly with less expensive rates.  The new TOH magazines feel cheap and flimsy, unlike the previous ones which I am proud to keep.

I agree, I've been a loyal subscriber for nearly 12 years, when I saw an issue in Walmart when I was in high school. I absolutely adored that issue, still have it. Little worn and tattered and stained, but its a staple in our house. To be honest, I haven't bought a single issue in over a year. They changed the format, gave into the 'no ads' policy, and now the magazine just plain sucks. I loved the "Do you have this recipe' section. I sent off many a recipe from my collection. I used to look at the photos and I would know if a recipe would go well in my house, but now, they dont look very good at all! Not appealing to the tastebuds! I let all my subscriptions run out, and I probably won't buy another. I'm very saddened that TOH let the publication run down, and judging by all the opinions here, I dont think they'll have many subscribers at this rate!

I'm also very disappointed with your new format.  I realize that you probably pared the magazine down because of our poor economy, but possibly you've pared it down too much.  You have really messed up a very good magazine.

I also let my subscription run out.  The magazine just isn't as good as it was when it Taste of Home.  If you ever go back to Taste of Home, I will check it out and if it is the same as it used to be, then I will subscribe.

TOH   what is the deal with all the ads.  Only reason I liked it was for the style.   recipes with out all the  high price fish or salamon. Now  it's just a ovwer priced  ad  store.

I too have let my Taste of Home run out. As a little girl I remember being so excited for my mom's to come in the mail. We would go through and make all the recipes we wanted (which was almost the whole magazine). It is the reason I developed such a passion for cooking, I own a bakery now. When I grew up, naturely I received it as a gift from my mom, but since the new format has come out I am so dissapointed.

Yes, I am in full agreement with all of the others who have stated that it is best to leave it alone if it is good.  The old magazine was much better than the new format.  Nancy M

I have to agree with all of the above.  What were the people in charge thinking?  I also have not renewed my subscription.  I threw my last magazine in the garbage, as it wasn't worth keeping.  All ads.....MP

I also agree with everything said above.  I used to get  Taste of Home, Simple and Delicious (Quick Cooking) and Light and Tasty.  They have all gone down hill.  I also am letting my subscriptions to them all run out and have no intentions of renewing them.  They used to be filled with good, down home, everyday type recipes and were enjoyable to read. Not any more.  Count me out.

I'll add my ditto to those above.  I do understand that with the economy the way it is you were not able to stay ad free and make a profit, but ads for Lyrica???  I suggest that only food products be allowed to advertise and then they must include a recipe for their product in the ad.  That would at least help.  The magazine is not nearly as good as it was in the beginning.  I guess you never heard the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I still like the magazine but hate the ads.  Your magazine was so different from all the others which made it special and enjoyable to read.  I used to try a lot of the recipes but several recently my family didn't like, a little disappointed.  Sherri

I'm in agreement with the opinions of all the above readers.  You once had a very special magazine that stood out above the others.  So many things have changed that I no longer look forward to receiving TOH plus I have stopped sending gift subscriptions.

My sister and I both get TOH from Mom.  We are no longer a fan for all of the reasons above.  Like many others, we have told Mom to not renew the subscription...It's to bad but I guess all good things do come to an end.   Now it sits days on the counter before I even bother to look at it.

A friend of mine was the one who turned me on to Taste of Home and Quick Cooking Magazines.  When our issues arrived we would call each other to see what we would each try from that issue, and then arrange for our tastings!  My old issues have many pages dog-eared with recipes already tried or still to be.  The recent issues, however, hardly have any marked pages as very few of the recipes even interest me anymore.  Unfortunately, with your updates/improvements somethings has gotten lost in the translation.  Maybe you should consider going back to the great magazines that these once were.  I will also be canceling my subscriptions for lack of interest.  Sorry.

I have gotten everyone of your magazines. I give out 22 magazines as gifts.  Not anymore.  You have taken the fun out of the magazine.  The little qutoes and the sides of the pages.  So many other interesting things.  Also your customer service is very hard to deal with.  I wish they could talk clearer english. Many of times they are very hard for me to understand.  I have had many mixups because of that.  Sorry I will not be renewing any more magazines.

I have never made comments so my question is this - do the editors ever respond? I have not been a subscriber long, but have my mother-in-law's old issues. I love them. I will look more closely. I still like the online issue. I am glad you all have spoken up. More people need to.
