As warm weather settles in and flowers begin to bloom, there is one thing driving my excitement about summer to a whole new level–farmer’s markets. Why, you may ask, am I so giddy about rising early to purchasing produce (oftentimes in inclement weather)? Two reasons: flavor and peace of mind.
To me, a tomato or strawberry just tastes better when it grows 20 miles away rather than 20,000 miles away. In my opinion, that difference in taste dramatically affects the overall flavor of the food I’m serving and makes it easier for me to eat extra fruits and veggies.
I also appreciate that I’m putting my money right into the hands of one of my neighbors. I can see the person who helped turn seedlings into my salad and learn their tips for preparing and serving whatever I’m picking up. Plus, many of these small farmers don’t rely on pesticides to grow their products, and seeing that I’m 7 months pregnant, I value that, and their reasonable prices, now more than ever.
So for me, longer days and higher temperatures signal that my diet is about to take on much healthier and flavorful qualities, thanks to all the fresh produce I can buy just a few blocks away. That being said, I’ll still continue indulging my occasional pregnancy cravings. The way my taste buds have been behaving, I just might start topping my ice cream sundaes with diced tomatoes!
Here’s to summer and all the great food that lies ahead!
