Kitchen Love

My kitchen doesn’t have granite countertops, stainless steel appliances or a Viking range. But, despite the 1980s golden oak cabinets with gold hardware, I do love my kitchen, and here’s why:

kitchen island1. Ode to my island. It may not be a tropical getaway, but the vastness of my island leaves enough room for mail to pile up on one side with plenty of workspace left on the other side. I can simultaneously prepare dinner, pack lunches for the next day and mix up a big batch of granola. It’s also great during Christmas-cookie season.

coffee station2. A gourmet coffee station. Well, not quite, but a dedicated cabinet for coffee, mugs and even coffee’s less attractive stepsister (tea), plus dedicated counter space for my coffeemaker makes mornings a little more pleasant.

tupperware shelves3. Tupperware merry-go-round. Have you even been to a party and helped the hostess pack up leftovers only to be attacked by the killer Tupperware cabinet? Bless the previous owner of my house for putting in a corner cabinet with spinning shelves. It’s where I keep all of my storage containers and lids. It has plenty of space to keep things organized, and the spinning shelves make containers easy to reach.

spice drawer4. Spice drawer galore. There’s a narrow drawer to the right of my oven that fits three small spice containers across. It’s like it was made for spices. Small spice containers are inexpensive, and since they’re small, I am able to use up the spices while they are still fresh.

pan cabinet5. Stand pans at attention. Right below my spice drawer there is a narrow cabinet—what can you possibly store in there?! Well, put in a vertical divider and use it to store baking pans and cooling racks—it’s perfect!

kitchen sink6. Double stainless steel sink. I’ve often pondered how I am able to go through so many pots and pans when I cook and bake. So I’m glad I have a double stainless steel sink—one side acts as the dish drainer instead of taking up counter space. And I love not having to worry about scratching or scuffing the sink with pots or pans as I would with an acrylic sink.

I have golden oak cabinets and a large center island. I shake my head when I go to open houses as see what they call custom kitchens. My cabinets were made by a local cabinet maker with all rollout shelves, a huge pantry and lots oif other features. I did change out the countertops to quartz and am deciding on new hardware, which means I'll replace the light fixtures too. I'm ready to get rid of the gold, opting for bin pulls in a brushed bronze. Oak withstands the test of time and is just perfect  in my country farmhouse. Visitors never want to leave my kitchen. SF

I agree that oak stands the test of time and I bet it will eventually come back around to being the style to have (hopefully avocado colored appliances won't come back in style!).

Rollout shelves are a great feature and so is a big pantry. I'm considering switching out my hardware too - a small change that can make a big difference.

Thanks for writing!

I, too, have lovely golden oak cabinets. They didn't have any hardware on them when I moved into my house, so I added some sleek brushed-nickel hardware and...what a difference! Talk about an inexpensive face lift!

My husband "customized" my kitchen when we moved into the retirement home of our dreams.  I think the make over was for him since I didn't get the island or marble surfaces that I wanted.  But, you know, I have an antique table that is serving the purpose of an island and a beautiful antique kitchen center to display all my antique dishes.  I can bake and cook with the best of 'em now, even without the island and marble counter tops.

It's amazing, your cupboards look like mine, except they're hickory.  The drawer pulls are the same style, but mine have a white ceramic center.  I have the tupperware turnetables in the corner too.  Now they make the kind that pulls out rather than turns, and if I could afford it I would replace the turntables for more efficient space.  I have the corkscrew, potato peeler bottle opener, and bottle stoppers in my little drawer, but I might find a way to move them to another drawer now that I see how nice the spices fit.  I also have the "stand the pans on edge" cupboard.  I like your kitchen too.

I like your kitchen.  When I see the stainless appliances I shudder and think I am in an institution rather than a home.  Wood is so much warmer than the cold steel.  My kitchen was remodeled a few years ago by a friend who also does remodeling professionally.  We sort of designed my kitchen as we went.  It has the light oak but no knobs.  I love the corner revolving shelves.  I have two sets of shelves the size that the smaller turntables fit into.  It is so convenient to be able to rotate the turntables and find my spices too.

I love that little spice drawer...what a GREAT idea! Mine has become the junk drawer and I thought I was doing great confining it to such a small space. Your idea is way better! I'm going to refresh my spices and give them a whole new address.

It looks like the narrow spice drawer is getting some ideas going:-) I really do find that it comes in handy.

Unfortunately, my junk drawer is three times that size. I try to go through it regularly but I've decided there are some odds and ends that really do belong in there because I can't figure out a better place to put them!

I too have golden oak cabinets in my new kitchen, I love it in the morning while having my coffee, the sun comes in and gives the whole kitchen a warm golden glow. I have granite counter tops, under the cabinet lighting and bookends on my island, a 48" thermador gas  stove with 2 ovens, (great at christmastime with all the baking). And Fisher&Pakel dish draws., These I love .

This is one of my favorite rooms in the house.

I'm lucky my husband is a very handy guy. That's why my kitchen sports a moveable island, which he created from a reclaimed floor cupboard. Totally handy for holiday meals because you can scoot it literally anywhere within the kitchen...if it's in the way of something, or we need it closer to the stove or another counter we just move it!  Plus the extra storage doesn't hurt (it has a vertical cabinet like yours, Peggy...I too use it for baking pans.)

I have stainless steel countertops (yup, he got the stainless at cost and did the whole thing himself!) which are worry-free and forever...but my favorite thing about the kitchen is the pot rack he designed and custom made to fit our kitchen. It's (surprise!) metal, with faux stained glass inlay pieces that can be easily changed to suit mood/new paint/etc...it will definitely last a lifetime!

You would think all that metal would make my kitchen look institutional or modern...but with golden oak cabinets, a huge sunny window, soft curtains, and charming decorations, it has a more casual, homestyle appeal. I really love my kitchen!
