Fired Up!

Spring seems to have been soggy for most, but our sunny season—with warm weather, bright tulips and pleasant breezes—is finally here. And I want to spend every moment I can outside.
This summer, I made a vow: I’m going to learn to grill. I won’t be the woman standing by as I let the men in my family tend the flames. Nor will I wait for special occasions to savor the great flavor of a sizzling steak, fresh-from-the-barbie kabob or hot ear of corn. This year, I’ll become the grill queen I always knew I could be!
Ok…maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but in my family, men have long been the grillers. There was Mom’s dad, Grandpa Rakey, who’d patiently work all day, turning out the best ribs in St. Louis. Then there’s Dad, who can smoke a turkey like no one’s business. And at family BBQs, my brother is charged with bringing “Carl’s Potatoes”—a mix of sliced new potatoes, red and green peppers, onions and a secret seasoning I only know ‘cause I’m family. So I’ve had good reason to wait for family gatherings to enjoy grilled foods. But, ever since I bought a house, I’ve looked forward to hosting my own barbecues, urging the men to step aside as I proudly proclaim, “Oh no, I’ll cook the steaks and chicken, hamburgers and brats today.”
Of course, my family will probably stick close the first few times, watching as I flip every fillet and drumstick, offering advice and a kindhearted wink to each other over my shoulder, but that’s ok. I’m learning after all, and if I garner a few tips from the grilling masters, it’s a good thing.
In the meantime, I’m going to visit our Grill Guide. It’s loaded with fantastic new recipes I want to try and practical how-tos I need to know about. And I encourage you to check out our cool “Get Grilling” contest. Top prizes include Weber grills, Omaha steaks and more. You can play daily, so be sure to stop back often. Also, don’t forget to share your grilling messes and successes with me. I’m sure I’ll have a fun story or two to tell by summer’s end, and I’d love to hear yours, too!

Happy Grilling, and to all of the moms and grandmothers, Happy Mother's Day, too!
Mary

Dear Fired up, You've inspired me. I drug the old grill to the curb and purchased a brand new weber with stainless steel grills. No guys in this house just myself, daughter and niece. Bet we can manage so nice to not wait for the briquetts to get hot. Grill should be delivered tomorrow. Sharon F.
