  • New question!! Making baking chips

I found a way to make my own flavored baking chips, but I was wondering, has anyone else ever made their own? I am going to attempt making orange flavor and pumpkin flavored ones.

If it all works out, will try other flavors!!

I make my own chocolate chips-- haven't even thought of trying anything else.  What a wonderful idea!  I will LOVE to hear what happens with your experiments-- especially the pumpkin flavored ones! ;-)

I'm sorry I didn't get back with you any sooner with this!

I don't have any special recipe.  When I started this, I simply did a search on "recipes chocolate chips".  It brought up several, and I kind of put several recipes together that fit my natural style of cooking.

It really is an easy concept, once you get going with it.  For chocolate chips. all you need to do is heat up cocoa, sweeten it, and add vanilla and something to harden it when it cools-- a form of shortening.  Then you pour it onto a greased baking sheet and let it chill.  When thoroughly chilled, break into bite-sized pieces and store in a sealed container-- best in a fridge.

These chips melt a lot more readily than store-bought ones.  So it really is important to keep them chilled.

And I don't know how your house will be, but I didn't get to bake any with my first batch-- they were too yummy to just reach in and snitch!  ;-)

    Enjoy!

Heat up cocoa?  Do you mean unsweetened cocoa powder, hot cocoa mix,???  Quantities and amounts?

You didn't mention how to make them?

I found the following recipe ~ it is simple and the page shows exactly how the process works.  They do use unsweetened cocoa.  Certainly going to give it a try.  My jaw almost drops to the floor looking at the prices on chocolate chips today!

Dear Cathy, I am most disappointed with your info regarding making your own choc. chips.   You tell us how simple it is, but your directions are quite lacking in info.  Are you using dry cocao or unsweetned baking chocolate ??  If you would, please give us a more clear way to attempt to do this.  I'm sure many of us would really like to make our own if we had better directions.  I did ATTEMPT to find it via the internet and there was not anything on how to MAKE homemade choc. chips., just recipes for using them, only.  There is a web addess listed by one of your readers, but it doesn't work.

This is the best idea I have seen in a long time! Will do it. Tired of paying such a high price for the store ones. And so easy!  Leverne in Palm Springs, CA.

The one I found uses already make chips. What I am going to do with the orange is:

Melt WHITE baking chips. I plan on using 1 cup to start with.

Add some orange extract or oil and mix well. Taste and adjust as needed.

Put the mixture in my press to pipe them out in chip form on aluminium foil and let them reset. (You can use pastry bags too as that is what the one place I found uses, but I have a press that I can make cookies or do piping!)

Then I plan on throwing them in my dough like a regular cookie!!

I am planning on doing this today sometime. SO I will get back to all of you when I do get them made!
