Chew a stick of gum while slicing or chopping onions to stop crying.

People have had home remedies for chopping onions since onions became a popular ingredient. The secret is to stand a bit away from the counter, keeping your face out of range, use a very sharp knife so you are not smashing the onions, which limits the amount of juice being sprayed around. Just keep the onion juice from your face, and you will be fine.

As Beema shared, there are so many ways that have been found to work through the years-- and it seems everyone has their little "tricks" that work for them. A sharp knife is, indeed, a must. A funny little thing I learned in college, that works for me is to holding a piece of bread in my mouth-- something to kind of "catch" the rising smells, coming between them and my nose. My mother always cut up onions underneath running water. Anymore, though, I'm finding I really don't have a whole lot of problem with them!
