Here's a Thanksgiving turkey tip from a Taste of Home reader:

"I always spread a generous amount of mayonnaise on my turkey before putting it in the oven. The mayonnaise is absorbed during cooking, making a moist, evenly browned and delicious turkey."

I have always just brushed the entire turkey with vegetable oil, with the same results.  My grandmother used to soak a cheesecloth in hot oil, then layer the entire bird with the cheesecloth which also kept the bird moist and evenly browned.  Times and traditions do change, I guess.

My Mom always laid strips of bacon over the turkey. She also basted the bird with a cup or two of ginger ale. I have no idea where she came up with this combination, but the turkey was always moist and delicious, and the gravy-slightly smoky and a little bit sweet- was amazing!  I've carried on the tradition, and am now famous among my son's friends for my "awesome gravy, Mrs. H!"

My mom always basted a ham w/ginger ale.  Never thought of using it on turkey.
