I agree the Vidala onion is really hard to beat.  The Shriners in our area always sell 10 lb. of vidalas for their fund raiser and I have bought them the pass couple years and have no problem storing them until this year and they did not keep at all and I did not think they were quite as sweet as they have been in the past.  I stored them the same way so I wonder if it could be their growing conditions.  I usually grow onions and sometimes I can keep them til Thanksgiving and other times there is no way to keep them other than chopping and freezing.  Thanks Beema for the tip on choosing onions and I have noticed in my sack that there are some flatter ones so I will pay attention  & try them  and see if there is a difference in sweetness the next time I buy some.       Nancy

OMGosh! Someone else knows what a Candy Onion is! I've only ever found one. I bought it at the Farmers Market and they were OUT ever after that! I've looked for starts, seed. . . the REAL (heavenly) sweet onion. . .with no success! If you EVER see them. . .buy them!

Yes, Beema, we have a winter place on the Mexican border of Texas that we would go to from late October til the first of April each year.  We did that for ten years of so, but now rent it.  As for our garage here at home, it's a/c'd in the summer and heated in the winter so no issues with storing foods.  We have a round patio table that is metal, similar to a mesh, that we'd keep them on, thus giving lots of air circulation.  The pantyhose do work but as someone said....who has those around anymore ??

I know the sweetest onion now is an onion candy or red candy, we have been growing it for about 8 years now and sell it at farmers markets. you can't buy it at the super markets yet, but I wish they would get them in. As my supply is running out for this winter already as we usually sell all that we can raise. And people kept asking for them. hopefully you can find some next spring and try them.  They make a good spring onion too.
