  • Club soda vs. seltzer water
    Hi,
I recently found the recipe for homemade root beer which calls for seltzer water. I have been as of yet unable to find seltzer water. Is there a difference between seltzer water and club soda? Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Kris

I dont think you should use club soda. Club soda is made to mix drinks and it used to have quinine added for bitterness, and maybe salt. (I think that is the same quinine that was used to treat malaria victims). Sparkling water might be ok. That is plain carbonated water. The only place I ever saw selzer water was in old Three Stooges movies. They would grab a 'selzer' bottle and squirt each other!

That's a descripion for tonic water...not club soda which is the same as Perrier...sparkling water.
Williams &Sonoma has CO2 cartridges available to make carbonated drinks.

You should be able to find Seltzer in any grocery store next to regular sodas. It's not uncommon

I buy seltzer in Safeway or Vons and it comes in cans or bottles. I find it by the tonic.

If you get a seltzer bottle to make seltzer, Check out a paint pellet group if your area has one. The seltzer bottles use the same CO2 cartriges that the paint pellet guns do. Often you can buy them cheaper and not have to pay shipping. If you use a lot of club soda you might want to look into buying the seltzer bottle. Spur of the moment chocolate sodas like they used to make at soda fountins; rootbear, creme soda and saparilla from the bases Cumberland General Store carries;the sparkling Jell-o . Even Kool Aid takes on a new life if made with seltzer.
