I have a jar of sesame seeds that I've had for quite a while. I've never used them, but just found a recipe using them. I was wondering if anyone out there knows how long sesame seeds keep?

Hi! I'd smell them and see if they are OK or stale. If you think they're OK, either taste them or toast them a bit, then taste. I'm thinking they should be OK for about a year if they were tightly sealed and not opened, etc. Otherwise, just get some fresh to avoid ruining your recipe.

They are a lot cheaper to buy in bulk or bagged in a health-food store, that type of thing, rather than in the spice jars.

Nuts and seeds will keep until they go rancid, and there's no specific time for that -- they could be rancid when you get them. So, never buy them in sealed packages, but go to the bulk food store, smell and taste before you buy. Then, place a dry paper towel in the package when you store them. I've never lost a nut of seed since I started doing that. Also it's a good idea to date everything you store -- you'll be surprised how time does fly.
