Since reading about flax and its helpfulness concerning hot flashes yesterday in the drs office I went ahead and started looking for additional info on this. I have been plauged by hotflashes off and on for a few months and a couple weeks ago was having them every 20 min or so for a couple days. Mentioning it to my dr last week he didnt tell me of this but just said I would have to work through them, then I read in a womans magazine yesterday that taking 1-2 tbsp a day is very helpful in alevieating those. I just wanted to share this info with the others here, in concern that they also get some relief from hotflashes. I see in this they are very healing in many other ways too.

    Hi, Cinbarra,
just coped the link and also looked it up in my old (early 50s) German herb encyclopedia (the firt book I had ever seen that gives the chenical constituents of palnts as they were known then).
Yes, Flax is really good for you, does nopt matter what color the seeds are.Used to be grown mainly for the fivers to make linen plus the health benefits.
When I was 5-6 years old we had a feed store 5 houses from us and I remember seeing falx-seed cakes for animals. They were about the size of the suet/seed cakes for bird feeders.
Yje nly mistake I saw in the Link article was: Flax seed is a plant with blue flowers. Hey, flax seed is not a plant but the seed of flax ,
    ( linum usitatiisiimum).
The oil is also good to keep your bowels lubricated and Red takes 3000 mg (3 capsules) p day so he does nt get impacted from adhesions and it is helping. Our plumber friend does the same for the same reason.
I put a lot of flax seed into my coarse whole wheat bread and buy it in 50 lbs sacks and freeze in smaller packages.
Bought my last sack a few weeks ago for, 50 lbs for $19.75 and when I opened the sack to put into smaller freezer bags, it was the yellow seed. It sells in our grocery store in 24 oz jars (fancy label and displau) for $7.00+. What a rip-off.....especially since the color of the seed does not matter. There is a small plant about 60 mi from us in Montana that started up about 1 1/2 yr ago for pressing oils, flax, rape-seed, safflower, then they advertised the business for sale about 6 mo ago. Don't know if the sold or went broke, or what, but will try to find out. Was a Mom and Pop operation. My German herb encyclopedia even recommends to use some flax seed oil for low heat cooking.Don't have time now to translate the rest, and will also look itup in the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.I remember the oil was used in linaments by our old hometown "Edelmann", an old guy without a degree but who could put dislocated joints together better than most doctors who often sent patients to him.

I started using flax seed after my eye Dr said the reason my eyes sometimes blur is because of dry eye. He explained that you have a pool of water in your eye and a film of oil over the water to keep the water from drying up. The oil in my eye has leaked out causing the water pool to evaporate. The cure was flax seed along with eye drops. The flax seed must be ground up as explained. I use a coffee grinder. It really has no taste so I use it in many things. And Freeze or refrigerate if you will use it soon.

Yes, I have ground flax seed in my cereal every morning :) I love the taste of it! It is rich in the Omega 3 oils that we need and don't get enough of... I also grind my Golden Flax seed in my coffee grinder... Good stuff and good for you :) Diana

I have been eating flax seed meal for almost a year. I am mine to lettuce salad and coleslaw. But can also be used on oatmeal and other foods.

For those of you with pms or menopause it is best if you combine it with other omega oils. I take NOW brand supplement called omega 3-6-9 for menopause along with other supplements for it also along with flax seed or flax seed meal.

I take a multi vitamin-mineral, extra calcium, extra vitamin E, extra chromium, glucosimine with chondroitin, omega 3-6-9, soy isoflavones and bioflavonoids. All my supplements are NOW products.

I have seen some improvements in hot flashes and mood swings from taking those supplements. It takes about 2 to three months of taking it to see any real benefits. It has been about 1 and 1/2 months of taking them so far.

Interestingly enough, I was at Trader Joe's on New Year's Eve day and noticed they are now selling potato chips with flaxseed in them. Just a heads-up for those who are interested.

I bought some flax seeds the day after reading about them, found them at Fred Meyers for 79 cents a pound, got just under a pound and am going to grind some this morning and add to some bran date muffins for breakfast.
Thanks for all the info on this.

Flax seeds and the oil are highly perishable so be sure to keep them refrigerated. I never use the oil in cooked recipes because even the smallest amount of heat can destroy valuable nutrients. Even grinding the seeds can cause nutrients to be destroyed.
When grinding use short repeated pulses.
An easy way to use the oil is to add it to cottage cheese.

Several scientific studies show that consumption of omega-3 oils leads to a substantially lower risk of death from coronary heart disease. Until recently, experts believed the best sources of omega-3 were fish oils. However, flax seed oil contains twice as much omega-3 essential fatty acids as fish oil products, without the fishy aftertaste.
