Homemade eggnog is not cooked. Just milk, egg, sugar, rum and nutmeg, blended together until frothy, or with the eggwhites beaten and added last. Eggnog in a carton uses pasteurized eggs. I assume boiled custard is boiled.

This recipe for eggnog comes from George Washington's own recipe archives.

    1 pint brandy
    1/2 pint rye whiskey
    1/2 pint Jamaica rum
    1/4 pint sherry
    8 eggs
    12 Tbsp sugar
    1 qt milk
    1 qt cream

Mix liquors first, then separate yolks and whites of eggs. Beat yolks and add sugar, mixing well. Add liquor to mixture slowly, continuing to beat. Add milk and cream, slowly beating. Beat whites of eggs until stiff and fold slowly into mixture. Chill thoroughly.

By the way, Old George was using vastly more liquor in his nog than I've even used.

i like boiled custard, but not as much as i used to.
the only eggnog i ever liked is the homemade that my Mom made me when she got her stand mixer many years ago. just egg, milk and maybe some sugar.
