  • Need a nice verse or poem for a funeral reading.
Can you please refer me to a lovely verse or Pslam or poem...for my aunt who passed away.

My brother is looking for something nice to read at the memorial service.

    Any suggestions?

Not a religious one, but I have heard it done a few times.

I'M GLAD YOU ARE IN MY DASH--

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
    From the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
    (1934-1998)

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth...
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

    For it matters not, how much we own;
    The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
    That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
    And always try to understand
    The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
    And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
    Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile..
    Remembering that this special dash
May last only a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

I'm very sorry about the loss of your aunt.

John 14:1-6 or Psalm 23 are both good passages for a funeral.

    "Count Your Garden"

    Count your garden
    By the flowers,
Never by the leaves that fall.

    Count your days
    By golden hours,
    Don't remember clouds at all.

    Count your nights by stars,
    Not shadows.

    Count your years with smiles,
    Not tears.

    Count your blessings,
    Not your troubles.

    Count your age by friends,
    Not years!

Thank you so much for your quick responses. The poetry is so lovely and the verses are awesome. I am copying all of this and will forward it to the family for a decision.

    Anymore to add?

Nothing new. I just know that a lot of families like to hear the 23rd Psalm during funerals.

    I like the dash poem.

    Sorry for your loss.

My sister had found this poem for our dad when he passed away last fall. We had this printed out and put on his Memorium.

    In Memory

In Memory, that's where you are,
In Memory, is where you must stay.
My Memory is where I have put you,
    And forever locked you away.

No one can ever touch you,
No one can steal you away.
For in my Memory I have put you.
And forever in my Memory you will stay.

You will never change, _____ (person's name)
    Your laughter will never fade.
Your smile is always with me,
Every second, every minute, every day.

You're always there, no matter what,
And you always help me thru,
And here with me you will always be,
But no one will ever know but me.

    God looked around His Garden.
And He found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this earth, And saw your weary face.
He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest.
    God's garden must be beautiful
    He always takes the best
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain
He knew that you would never
    Get well on earth again.
He saw that the road was getting rough,
And the hills are hard to climb.
So He closed your weary eyelids,
    And whispered "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you
    But you didn't go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your aunt.

This is my personal favorite. It was read at my father's funeral more than 30 years ago, when I was a teenager. I loved it then, and I still love it now.

    WHAT IS DYING?

I am standing on the sea shore.
A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts
for the blue ocean She is an object
    of beauty and I stand
and watch her until at last she
    fades on the horizon.

Then someone at my side says
    "There she has gone" -
    gone where?
Gone from my sight - that is all.
She is just as large in the mast,
hull and spars as she was
when she left my side. The
    diminished size and total loss
of sight is in me and not in her,
and just at that moment when
    someone by my side says
"She's gone" others on a distant
    shore take up
    the glad shout -
    "There she comes!"

Thank you Chamomile for this poem. I have been looking for it for 10 years. I heard it read at a funeral where I was asked to sing and have been looking for a copy since then. You really made my day. Thanks!

This was read at my little brother's funeral 5 years ago. He died unexpectedly at age 38, and left a young wife and 2 little girls, 4 and 6.

    Do not feel sad
    I have not gone.
I am in the snow that glistens.
I am in the sunrise and sunset.
I am in the mist from the spray of the ocean.
I am in the wind of gentle breezes.
I am in the beauty of the mountains.
I am in the sparkle of the stars.
I am in the rays of sunshine.
I am in the quietness of your thoughts.
    I have not gone.

This was given to me when my sister died.

    In Loving Memory of ______

God saw she was getting tired,
and a cure was not to be.

He put His arms around her,
    and whispered come with me.

With tearful eyes we watched her
suffer and saw her fade away.

    Although we loved her dearly,
we could not make her stay.

    A golden heart stopped beating,
    strong hands are at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us,
    He only takes the best.
