Me again with another green awful fruit problem!!! LOL
I've been so hungry for a fresh peach. I picked up 2 at the local store. None of them had that really strong lovely peach smell and weren't the least bit soft. So I brought them home, sat them on the table and in 2 days they were shriveling. Now they are in the trash can. Any hints/tips for getting them to ripen? So much for fresh summer fruit. I live in California, in the San Joaquin valley where we grow darn near everything and I can't buy fresh, local grown decent fruit!

Wow, you should have taken them back to the store! What a waste! I used to throw away fruit too, but now I return it.

I seem to remember (I hope I remember correctly), that you can put them in a brown paper bag on the counter and they will ripen faster. I think I will look it up and see if I can find any better answer.

Oh, and what a shame about them shipping your local stuff away. That would be like Georgia people not getting first pick at Vidalia onions, or those yummy peaches and pecans!
Sometimes things just don't make sense!

You know, I thought it was with an apple too, so that may be it, since we were both thinking the same thing.

I just found this on a website, but no mention of apples. I still think I heard that...or it may have been to ripen bananas, which I once had to do because I had a banana bread emergency! LOL

"After peaches are harvested, they begin the ripening process. And the best way to achieve a consistently delicious taste with peaches is by ripening them properly at home.

    bag-ripening technique
Believe me, there’s no secret to ripening peaches. They ripen best at room temperature in a brown paper bag. Just place them in a bag on your kitchen counter for 2 to 3 days. You can tell when peaches are ripe because they’ll be soft to the touch and fragrant. Before you know it, peaches have ripened into a sweet and juicy treat! If you have peaches that need to be ripened, try this neat bag-ripening technique."

    It said this too:

"As peaches are ripening, they produce ethylene gas, which is a natural ripening hormone. A loosely closed paper bag keeps ethylene gas close to the fruit so it ripens more effectively.

Paper bags help prevent shrivel by holding in the humidity produced by fruit in respiration during ripening. Plastic bags do this TOO well, allowing a buildup of moisture on the surface of the fruit, which may hasten decay. A paper bag "breathes" a bit, maintaining just the right environment for ripening. "

So is mine Rebecca. Thanks to you and Sharon, now I'll try it again!!!
Yes I love that we ship everything out and import the same product back in here! Sheesh makes so much sense!!! NOT
Sharon-how are you feeling? How are the puppies doing. Broke my heart to hear they weren't well. I've just been so emotional about dogs lately since I lost my Dreyfuss and the following week my son lost his dog. So take care of those sweeties!

Oh my gosh, dreyfuss, when did it happen???? I must have missed the post and I'm so sorry! I could cry...I'm really sorry.

My Cio-Cio is much better and we will find out next week if her crystal problem in the urine was due to the trip or is a chronic genetic problem.

Prince will see a specialist next Thursday because the new vet didn't succeed in getting the scope in far enough to take a picture or even get the dye to pass the obstruction in his urethra. He may need surgery, so I'm praying it all goes well. I will take him to Capitola and probably spend the whole day there, waiting for the outcome.

I still feel exhausted and crappy, myself. I'm so achy! I FINALLY got all my clothes put away (bought a slew of those neat flocked hangers today at Bed n' Bath), so just have to store away some extra linens and towels and stuff in space bags, hang a few pics, do a little touch-up painting, buy a couple of pieces of furniture, have some sod put into the back patio for the doggies...and...and....I will never be done, I think.

Not to mention, I have to rehearse for a concert I'm doing in two weeks. Did I mention I have a new ESL student who is depending on me too?

I would run, but I'm too tired...

Sharon he got very ill 2 weeks ago Friday. Of course on Friday night facing a weekend with my vet closed for the weekend. He couldn't even get up and walk so I grabbed a blanket and spent the night laying next to him on the floor. Oh he was needy that night. The minute I took my hand away he wanted it back. Saturday morning I took him to the SPCA to have him put down. I could have had a friend come over and give him an injection but I would still have had to take his remains to the SPCA for the cremation. Now he's back home again or at least his ashes are. Need to find a nice container to put him in.

OMG, that's so awful for you to have gone through! Was he sick that you knew of? That just breaks my heart. I don't kow what I'll do when my dogs go. God willing, it'll be at least another 10 years, but there just IS no good time for it.

For goodness' sake, don't you be worrying about "manners"! My concert is so nothing compared to what you must be feeling now. I wish Prince and Cio-Cio could see you and comfort you. Did you say you were coming to Daly City? I don't actually know where you live, but we really should meet, if you come here.
