  • Has Anybody ever had a black spot on the inside of their cheek?
I went to the dentist recently...teeth are fine, no cavities, gums in great shape, no bleeding or deep pockets. Flossing really works!

However, I have a black spot on the inside of my cheek and the dentist wants me to go to an oral surgeon to have it biopsied.

Now, she told about "amalgam tatoos", which I understand come from the metal of fillings leeching into the flesh and staining it. However, I had all my fillings changed out to composite at least 15 years ago or more. I don't recall ever seeing this black spot or having another dentist mention it to me.

That doesn't mean it wasn't there, but I can clearly see it when I open my mouth, now that I know it's there.

I have been putting off the biopsy because first, I had a whole slew of auditions and thought it would be bad to have a sore in my mouth and have to sing.

Second, I'm nervous, I guess. I bet it's nothing, maybe it's been there all along...but I suppose it makes me feel funny to think about what it COULD be.

Anybody ever have this and what can you tell me about it? Do you think it's anything to worry about? When I called the oral surgeon's office to ask about what the procedure entailed, the girl said "they just cut it out"...and I said, "how do you cut out a spot?" She said, "well, it's like a white thing, right?" I told her no, it wasn't a bump and wasn't white. It's bluish-black. hmmmmm.....

What do you think? Maybe I should stop that chawin' tobaccy habit of mine! LOL

Just trying to find some humour in a situation that makes me nervous. sigh.

I don't know. It's not supposed to be there, that much I know. My best to you. Take care, and try not to worry too much.

Diva, you know you should have given up chaw years ago!! Any chance it is a blood blister from a cheek bite? What have you been auditioning for lately? Hows DH?

    Yes. I had that once.
Mine was from biting my cheek.
    It healed on it's own.

    I don't think it's from biting...it's not sore or anything. I can't feel it.

I'll just try not to think about it too much. I guess worrying won't change whatever it is, huh?

Lnz, DH is in Japan right now...I just spoke to him. He's not feeling too great today, but I suppose that's to be expected. Thanks for asking.

Auditions have been for Madame Butterfly, I Pagliacci and Cavalleria Rusticana, as well as Man of La Mancha and 1940's Radio Hour. I got a part in Radio Hour, but decided not to do it. I don't know about call backs for the others yet, but will keep you posted..

I don't have a black spot but I have this round circle on the inside of my cheek. The dentist has this new doo dah...like an ultra ray of some sort that they (wearing special glasses) detects oral cancers. They check it every time I have my teeth cleaned which is every 3 months. I asked about a biopsy once and they said rite now it didn't look necessary but could be recommended down the road but not to worry about it cuze the type of biopsy they would do is more like a scrapping and not to worry about it. Easy for them to say! I'd check it own, Sharon, just to ease your mind. You know, most things like that are benign and finding out early will put your mind at east. Check it out ASAP....Those auditions can wait.

Thanks Roma. I am going to call and make the appointment tomorrow, probably have it done next week. The auditions are over for a while, so I have no excuse now.

Diva, get the spot checked ASAP. It might be some simple explanation that will put your mind at rest.

I had a bad ulcer in my mouth this week, which scared me. Mom told me to rinse my mouth with warm salt water, which I did. It is nearly gone now, but it was sure painful. I rinsed my mouth with the salt water 3-4 times a day.

I will Mary, I promise. I don't have any pain, just a feeling of nausea when I think of it...ha. It's probably nothing, but I might as well know. My new dentist was really adamant, but said it's nearly always just an amalgam tatoo that maybe I didn't notice before or just a benign nothing.

I've just never had to worry about anything with my health before.

Sharon, remember the old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." It's easy to dwell on something regarding your health when you've always been healthy before. This happened to me when my doc referred me to a specialist; I freaked, but got myself to the specialist ASAP. Turned out to be nothing but I lost about 10 lbs. and couldn't sleep. lydia

Yup, I know the "can't sleep" thing. I'm still up and it's past 4am.

I baked muffins at 2am. sigh.

At least I'll have something tasty to have with coffee for breakfast.

I guess I better try to get to sleep. I'm taking my fuzzpups with me. Cio-Cio snuggles good.

    'night.

Sharon.....amalgam tattoos are permanent. So, if you had silver fillings before it's likely from that....even if you hadn't noticed it before. Those are nothing to worry about.

It could also be a blue nevus...although doubtful because you can't feel yours and it's more like a mole. Those are RARELY malignant but could be down the line. That's why they want you to check it out.
