  • How can I find local tv listings

I live in NY, my mother lives in MN.  She has no computer.  She is 81.  She cancelled her cable because it was getting too expensive.  She now watches regular tv.  She is getting about 15 local channels.  When you have just the local channels, there is no GUIDE to know what is on.

Do newspapers or even magazine companies such as TV GUIDE still publish (daily/weekly)  tv listings?  If they do, I wouldn't mind paying her subscription just so she could get the listing.  It would be much cheaper than paying for her cable.

Any ideas on where I can find a listing?  Or who to contact?

What part of MN is she in?    I would think that the city paper where she lives would be the place to contact.   For instance, I live in Rochester, and our local paper has a TV magazine section on Saturday for the coming week.  Maybe her paper has something similar?

I think TV Guide magazine is a waste of time.  It lists only the prime time programs, and nothing after 9-10 pm Central time.   Years ago, it had regional editions and they were okay, but no more.  And they list every single clannel available, it seems!  Nothing local, just the Letter channels---NBC, ABC, CBS and the rest are all cable channels.  Now, TV Guide magazine is mostly all articles about actors and actresses and the shows.  I wouldn't call it a "guide" anymore!

She lives north of Elk River.  Small town called Zimmerman on Hwy 169.  She lives in retirement community/apartment complex.  She says that there are no free newspapers that get delivered there that have tv listings.  I do know that the surrounding towns have newspapers published, but they only carry the towns news/police report/council meetings, etc.

She does not know what newspapers get delivered in the area either from the larger companies such as the MPLS STAR & TRIBUNE.

I remember years ago, when I lived in MN, you could go into almost any store/gas station and pick up a small magazine similar to TV GUIDE that had the listings and it was free.  Now, THAT is more of what I am looking for for her.

I will tell her to ask around with the other tennants, but more than likely they all have cable.  Maybe someone subscribe to a paper and is willing to give her the listing if they have it.

I know what you mean about the little free magazines that stores used to have---usually by the cash register where I shopped!  But I haven't seen them for a long time.   Whether they aren't published anymore or stores just don't have them where I shop, I don't know.

Anyway, if the Minneapolis Trib has a TV section on the weekend edition, I am pretty sure she could take it just for that edition.  I don't know whether you would want to spend the money for just that one paper a week though.  If the channels she gets come from the Twin Cities, why not call the Minneapolis Trib and see if you can get something for her?   The number for the Trib is---(612) 673-4000.   That is the main number and they can probably direct you to the proper person to ask about this!   Hope you can get something for her!

A TV schedule comes with the Sunday Star Tribune. However, it is so tiny that I have trouble reading it. You can get the Sunday paper only for her. The TV schedule is not a booklet -- just a couple of pages folded in with another section. I don't like it, but it is the only one I know about.

Do they still sell TV Guide in the grocery store? They have local schedules.
