The reports on the news and the pictures accompaning them don't look good. The soil is cracked open from lack of rain and the stalks are way below the normal height. They opened up several ears and the top half had only the cob, no kernals. Some farmers are considering not harvesting at all as the expense outweighs their profits. Beef cattle need feed and pasture so no rain, no pasture. Some are selling off their herds already. Am wondering what the buyers are going to do with them if pasture is a premium. So, beef prices will go up. Recently I have noticed there have not been very good sales on beef at the stores, even Costco is, in my opinion high. Pot roasts there are no cheaper than Safeway or WinCo....I compared last week. Not paying $3.50 a lb for pot roast. Hopefully someone will have some good sales soon. If not I guess we eat lots of chicken and pork. But chickens need corn in their feed, too, don't they?
A vegitarian I am not! LOL
Corn & wheat & & &
This drought isn't going to be kind to our grocery bills I'm afraid. Army worms here in the East did a number on farmers crops, they've hurt feed production for the dairies which will affect milk supply and quality.

I am...but I can't really do anything about it....
and corn is used in tons of stuff...NOT just beef etc....so prices will rise and they have already been trying to get us ready for the price hikes of tons of stuff...from fuel to food...
It's not how you start, it's how you end....so end strong!!
Walk yourself strong!!
What a strange world we live in, where we've bred cattle and poultry to depend on corn instead of grass, weeds and bugs, so that we now have to grow food to feed to our food.Mind you, I won't be sad if they stop putting corn starches, sweeteners and by-products into everything in the supermarket.
A lot of this is folk memories and cultural hangovers.

And don't forget as a 10% substitute in the tanks of our cars.
Maybe now we will also rethink our use of high fructose corn syrup and return to plain old sugar.
I've never understood un-irrigated farms, but I guess that's because I live where the only farming possible must take place near rivers. But to answer the question--I am concerned any time corn is danger. If it hasn't been made abundantly clear by now, I love corn. And goats.
Back in those days folks cooked their food, not built a shrine to it.
Corn is good (at least it isn't insane) so, yes, I am concerned.
Yeap - I'm concerned. Higher beef prices - will we be able to afford hamburger? Maybe hamburgers will be like eating steak?
I love corn. But I guess it's a good thing red beans and rice is mighty good food too.
My Girl
Hamburger is just as expensive as other cuts of beef here. Usually chuck is a lot cheaper.
I'm having red beans and rice for supper tonight.

Where do you think the water comes from and you must have the equipment to do this? This is a very unusual set of circumstances for us here in the Midwest.. Most small farm operations around here can't afford to and are not going to invest that kind of money just for the heck of it. We usually have timely rains and then on top of this we have the Government regulations and ethanol that gobbles up corn and costs more to produce than it's worth. Very bad!
Well we are devestated...not good! Son has a feed mill in central Illinois and the price of feed to feed livestock is going up $ 100.00 to $200.00 a ton. Not good. Glucose that is added to feed Can only be accessed on Saturday and the mill is closed so he will have to pay a driver time and a half on that day. Farmers will not be able to afford this and will sell off their livestock. Look for prices to go sky high for all food and good luck with your pet food too! Son also manufactures pet food and people will not slight their pets...so that is a plus. Farmers are predicting 50 bushels an acre instead of 200! Most are plowing fields under. It's a panic situation for many of our friends. Not good!
This is going to be a bad year for many...better sock some money away!

I remember when in 1954 or 1955 our pastures were brown. My Dad said one Sunday, "if we don't get rain tomorrow I'll have to sell the cows." Fortunately it did rain. My mother sat by the window sewing and crying and my Dad I'm sure cried a few tears too. It was not a pleasant time. I feel for all of the farmers now.
my faith ahs beentellingus for many years to have a 2 year food dtorge on hand. that we would need it in the future. and i think that day is coming quickly
this isjust more problems for everyone. good thing my dogs eat what i eat or we would be in bad shape. i give them the leftovers so nothing goes to waste.
LF Unfortunately the grass is drying up, too, because of no rain. It's not just the corn crops.
Vets will tell you not to feed your dog from the table....bad for them. Leftovers are consumed by DH and myself. Yesterday for example and tomorrow, too. Nothing goes to waste around here either
Safeway had corn 6 for a dollar the other week so I bought a few to give it a try. Excellent!
So I bought more and have 30 ears in the freezer for winter. Always freeze about that many anyway so the corn problem had nothing to do with it. Will be at Costco this week and will buy maybe three bags of frozen kernels.
Not much we can do about high beef prices except to buy a half or quarter beef right now before the price goes way up or quit eating it altogether.
I feel sorry for the cattle ranchers and farmers.
Well, I'm telling you it is a very serious situation. I live on a farm in southeast Nebraska and our corn crop is pretty much gone. Soybeans are hanging on but can't much longer with no rain. I haven't had any measurable rain for 2 months and supposed to be near 100 or higher for the forseeable future. Pasture situation is not good and who is going to buy the cattle we have if they have nothing to feed them? It is just scary. I worry what would happen if someone drives by and throws out a cigarette at night.
