Do most people that go through these surgeries have that kind of pain? Even after the fact?

Many of them do, yes.  I know people that wear morphine patches every day to combat the pain their in, even after surgery.  It's really sad.  You sometimes wonder what on earth the surgeon actually 'fixed'.

Feel better Cass!  Fall always seems to be the worst for anyone with arthritis, the pressure swings really make for some aches & pains.

That is horrible. I have a BIL who was in traction in the hospital for 3 months. He was told that any back sx is not a guaranteed fix and that he should try that first.  He was able to avoid sx so far.  I do sympathize with back pain. I have neck and back problems and use that drug when I have to. All it does it take the edge off, but at least it enables me to move .

Dang! That is a lot of hydocodone. Do most people that go through these surgeries have that kind of pain? Even after the fact?

I hope you feel better today.

Hydrocodone is highly addictive - your body builds up a resistance to it, and it takes more the drug to deliver relief. That may be why it doesn't work for her now.  I am really surprised that a doctor would prescribe it for a patient for 8 years!!

Yes, that is a lot of hydrocodone, and most doctors won't prescribe it for that long because the FDA can come down on them hard and they can lose their license for prescribing it too much.  You're also right, rich, that it's a highly addictive drug.  I have it because I have severe arthritis in my hip joints but I don't use it unless I can't stand the pain anymore.  I've had several pain injections in my back that have helped, but now I've become tolerant to the steroid and they don't work anymore.

Cassie, if you're still having that much pain then you need to get yourself to a pain clinic.  Often doctors don't know how to treat pain, especially if there's no medical reason for you to have it.  A pain specialist can evaluate that and may be able to get you some relief.  Ask your neurosurgeon or orthopedic doc to give you a referral.  You can Google pain clinics in your area.  You really need to get off all that hydrocodone because it's not the answer to the problem.

THANK YOU !  to all of you who just think this is a big drama post,  me wanting sympathy and other BS.  Yes,  they are going to do an MRI and my Dr. said they are doing it becouse I had a problem in 2009 with  blood vein problem around my spine.  It turned out ok,  BUT I had no pain up there.  He said this is out of his field and he had quite a talk with my Spine Dr,  they are both very conserned.  There is a name but I already forgot it.  I e-mailed him a while ago to send it to me so I can do some research.

Don't worry bad news or good news I won't be posting about it.  He would not even discuss it with me today until they see the MRI.    The pain I'am having is NOT from the Fusion or this much Arithritas. End of discussion.

Am I the only one who thought retteacher was just warning cassie that other people might start drama because of her post? Because like in so many other posts of cassie's the drama just builds and builds?

....and I thought YOU were the one insisting on the MRI, even if you had to pay for it out of your own pocket....now the doctor is the one saying you need the MRI?

Opening post: Can't wait till tommorow morning.  I have a Dr. appt with my GP.  What a waste of his time and mine.  I requested an MRI as I have this pain now more than ever.  He said he talked to the Spine Clinic and they want him to check me out first and ask me questions.

First reply:  If they don't want to give me the MRI,  then I will tell them I will pay for it myself or go to a Private X-Ray Co. and get it.

And now: Yes,  they are going to do an MRI and my Dr. said they are doing it becouse I had a problem in 2009 with  blood vein problem around my spine.

    No Renee,

It is not SS.  It definately started with an H and is a long word.  I should hear back from my Dr. this morning or he will answer me on Monday.

I just hope they call very soon for the MRI.  We just want this ruled out what they are looking for that is causing this pain.  Am i scared, yes.   Thank you for asking about the SS.  I will send you a PM.

Do most people that go through these surgeries have that kind of pain?

Whiteflower, I have never met a patient who has undergone spinal fusion who didn't regret it.   The initial effects seem miraculous, but as time goes on, it becomes less and less a blessing.  For some people, it comes fast, and for some it comes over time, but it's agony.  The pain is real.  However, since we've been told that this not related to the fusion, I guess the whole point is moot.

Cassiebabe, I hope for your sake, whatever is hurting you is finally put to rest.  Pain should not be a way of life.  You have my cosmic thoughts, and all my hopes, that whatever it is gets resolved soon.

  • Re: Hurry up pain pill kick in NOW ! I could use a prayer or good wishes.

I just have to ask Cassie. How come its taken them so  many yrs to do a MRI? I just dont get it. You been on these pills all these yrs and they havent done anything to check into it?? I dont think you are a abuser, but you are addicted even tho you are having this horrific pain. Your mind and body dont know how to act without it,very normal for someone that is on a narcotic for so many yrs. BUT I do hope this pain can get fixed!
After your surg's 10 yrs ago, was there ever any followup scans or xrays done to make sure the fusion stuck? So basically you been on pain meds for 10 yrs or so.
