  • Need ideas for youth group theme night--"Mystery Night"
Do all you wonderful, intelligent people have some great ideas? Next Sunday night our theme is "Mystery Night" and I need ideas for food, anything, that would go along with that theme. I was thinking about making things that look like something other than what they are, but I'm not positive I'm going that route. Any suggestions?

I guess Mystery Night will remain a mystery, even to me! Thanks for the bump, San.

I have a "mystery cookbook" I could probably find tonight that has recipes taken only from published mysteries. Let me know if you want me to dig it up.

That sounds great, yankeecook, if it isn't too much trouble. That would give me a place to start! Thanks.

I'm not sure how it's done...but you can make a "smoking" punchbowl. You use dry ice around the bowl...I think I saw something posted in Recipes about Halloween time. Try doing a search for it!!
Things not looking like what they are...what about lemon-flavored icing on cake/cupcakes...but tint the icing with another color like red (ooohhh scary, blood-colored!!!).
The "menu" for your meal could be written in word jumbles/or clues, the kids will have to "decode" the menu???
Oh...what about everyone wearing a mask..."hiding" their identities???
    Let me keep thinking... :)

MissEllie, if you see this, I found the cookbook I mentioned yesterday. It was published by the MidAtlantic Mystery Writers Guild and contains recipes from authors that reflect their characters. I can list the recipes if that will help you. Truth be told, they're not overly mysterious, just have catchy names. Let me know.

Yankeecook--That would be great. Even if it is just regular food with catchy names, that would go along with our theme. Thanks!

Go to family fun . com and search in the recipe section "April Fool's Day food". They have a lot of recipes that look like one thing but are something else. For example-it looks like a cupcake, but it's really a ground beef mixture as the "cake", and colored mashed potatoes as the "icing". Also a grilled cheese sandwhich that is made from cake--and so on.

I have seen mystery meals - where you have a menu and place your order and you get what you order!

For example - there were even euphamisms for silverware and if you didn't ask for it - you don't get it!

I can't for the life of me remember any specifics. Maybe you could use old diner terms?

I think I have a book with this in it, but I can't remember!
