  • What Is A Fraternal Grandparent?
I have heard of paternal and maternal grandparents. Several people on the board have mentioned their fraternal grandparents. What are these? I never have had one, as far as I know?

Grandparent who aren't related to the child? The way mix-and-match families are going these days, there's got to be new terms for these people by now...

"Of or relating to brothers: a close fraternal tie.

    Showing comradeship; brotherly.

Of or constituting a fraternity: a fraternal association."

Seriously wondering if this is just a way of lumping all grandparents without distinction of maternal or paternal??

Good question, I'm not real sure either.

I'm tending to think the same as San. They probably mean Paternal.

Of course, as April pointed out, these days it's hard to say.

I've always thought fraternal grandparents were your father's parents and maternal were your mother's parents. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

What's interesting is I Googled it:

"While obviously indebted to her famous fraternal grandparent..."

"Exposure to my fraternal grandparent's roots in the Holiness faith only added to
    my confusion....."

I can find quotes using the term but can't find a definition, so it's not a mistake.
