  • Need recipe for Pigs in a blanket dough..
I am looking for a recipe for homemade dough to wrap around little smokies to make pigs in a blanket. I usually use crescent rolls, but I wanted to dress it up a little bit. Does anyone have a good recipe?

    Thanks!

This recipe is from the 60s. What I like about it is you make your own dough rather than using puff pastry.

    Pigs In A Blanket

    1 cup flour
    salt to taste
    1 tbsp. butter
    1 tbsp. lard
    1 1/2 tbsp. cold water
1/2 lb. sausage meat or skinless sausage

    Set oven to 450º.
    Mix dough.
    Divide dough in half.
    Roll each half into a 10 x 3" rectangle.
Sprinkle sausage meat with flour. Shape into 2 - 10" rolls.
Place on dough, roll up and seal.
Cut into 2" lengths, notch the tops with a knife.
Brush tops with milk to make them shiny.
Bake in the top half of the oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
    Serve either hot or cold.

Here is the recipe I use.

    PIGS IN BLANKET

    6 cups flour
    2 tsp salt
    4 tsp baking powder
1 cup shortening (I use margarine)
    3 cups milk

Mix flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening. Add milk (enough to make soft dough, don't add all of it at start). Roll out and cut into triangles. Roll dough around meat. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
    Yield: 10 dz approximately

I use a yeast dough recipe for making pigs in a blanket have you tried using something like that yourself? They are very, very good. I make the dough from scratch, let it rise, then punch it down and when I shape the bread, I shape it to fit the hot dogs and let them rise again and bake. Connie

Here's a good yeast dough recipe you might try.

    DOUGH
    1 cup warm water (105º to 115ºF)
1 package Fleischmann's® Active Dry Yeast
    2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    3 cups all-purpose flour (3 to 3 1/2 cups)

Make dough: Place 1/4 cup warm water in large, warm bowl. Sprinkle in yeast; stir until dissolved. Add remaining water, sugar, butter, salt and 1 1/2 cups flour; blend well. Stir in enough remaining flour to make soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 4 to 6 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 45 to 60 minutes.

Punch dough down. Remove dough to lightly floured surface; divide into eight or ten equal pieces (depending on how many hotdogs in your package). Roll each piece and wrap around a hotdog. Place seam side down on baking sheet. Let rise for 20 minutes or so. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.

When I make my sausage rolls or kolaches I use frozen roll dough. I let them thaw and rise. Then pat out and wrap sausage in them. My family loves them!

I use canned biscuits, I would brush them with an egg wash and sprinkle with sesamee seeds or poppy seeds to liven them up. (or mix a bunch of seeds, dehydrated onion, garlic, and parmasan cheese and roll your pigs in their blanket in it to make kind of a everything bagel concept, you could even use puff pastry)
