  • Does anyone make those big old fashioned puffy sugar cookies?
My grandma used to make them-they weren't cutout- but dropped by (what she called) a soupspoon, and she sprinkled sugar on them before baking. She never really wrote down her recipes, but I think she may have used sour or buttermilk and a little nutmeg or mace in them.
    Anyone have a similar recipe?

My grandmother made those and they were so good. I make them too but I sure wish I had some of hers again. She mixed up batter like she would for a cake but used a bit more flour and dropped them by a big spoon on the cookie sheet. Many people call the puffy sugar cookies tea cakes.

These are really good foodguy. They are a really tastey puffy sugar cookie that gets a nice crack to the top when cooked.

    WHITE COOKIES

    1 ½ cups white sugar
    2 egg yolks
    2 cups flour
1 ¼ tsp. cream of tarter
    1 cup regular Crisco shortening
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 tsp. vanilla

Mix well Crisco, sugar, egg yolks and vanilla. Then add flour, cream of tarter and baking soda. Roll into balls and then into sugar. Place onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 325* for 15-18 minutes.

Note** Using only regular Crisco shortening will ensure you the most puffiness in your cookie. Using a mix of Crisco and butter you will not have the same effect. Also I baked mine the whole 18 minutes. Ovens temperatures will vary.

    SUGAR COOKIES

    Effort: easy
Comments: I get about 4 dz. Cookies. I like these because they are so easy to make. No rolling of the dough. This is really good to sprinkle powder sugar over the top of the cookies after they have cooled.

    Ingredients:
    2 c. butter flavored shortening
    2 c. sugar
    2 eggs
    3 t. vanilla
    4 c. flour
    1 t. salt
    2 t. baking powder

    Instructions:
    Cream sugar & shortening.
    Add eggs & vanilla.
    Mix well
    Add other ingredients.
    Mix well.
Form into small balls & place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in 325 oven for 13 - 15 min., or until light brown.
These will melt in your mouth.

    I got around 4 dz.

foodguy, I know the one you are talking about; my girlfriends mom used to make them when we were kids. I wrote this down for my daughter so here it is verbatem:

    Jackie’s Mom Soft Sugar Cookies

    Soft together:
    4 cups flour
    2 teas. Baking soda
    1 teas. Salt

    CREAM:
    1 cup Crisco (or butter)
    2 cups sugar

    ADD
    2 unbeaten egs
    2 teas. Nutmeg
1 cup of sour cream alternately w/dry ingredients
Place on cookie sheet and sprinkle with colored sugar.

Bake at 375° for about 9-10 minutes

    • Preheated oven to 375°
    • I put the flour, baking soda and salt in a large bowl and ‘sifted’ it with a wire whisk till all was incorporated
    • I beat the butter in my kitchen aid bowl till it was creamy, then slowly added the sugar till it was incorporated into the butter
    • Added the nutmeg and blended it thoroughly (still with my kitchen aid here)
    • Added eggs, one at a time, blending till incorporated
    • I added the sour cream and dry ingredients alternately, starting and ending with the flour (still with my kitchen aid)
    • Greased my air-bake cookie sheets with butter
    • Placed tablespoon of mixture on cookie sheet and sprinkled with colored sugar
    • Baked for 10 minutes
    • Let them cool for 2 minutes, then removed to paper lined tray
    • Started the whole thing over again. I only cooked one cookie sheet at a time…
    • Actually, while I only cooked 1 sheet at a time, I was preparing ahead and always had 1 to put in the oven as I was taking out the finished one.
