Does anyone know the difference between Chili Sauce and Ketchup???

    I had chili sauce with my french fries last night and I can't tell a difference other than it might be a bit more tany than ketchup, but it was good!

    Chili Sauce
    1 peck tomatoes

    2 C. vinegar
    2 C. ground onions
    2 C. ground green peppers
    2 C. sugar
    2 t. cinnamon
    1 t. cloves
    1 t. cayenne
    2 T. salt

    Put all ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a boil, turn heat down to medium. Cook until it thickens.



    Tomato Catsup

    1 gallon tomato pulp
    2 cups sugar
    2 cups vinegar
    1/2 teaspoon ginger
    1/2 teaspoon allspice
    1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
    1/2 teaspoon chili powder
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    2 tablespoons salt

    Make tomato pulp from cooked tomatoes, that have been put through a sieve. Boil hard for 1 hour. Then add 1 heaping tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in a little water. Boil another half hour. Bottle and seal.

    The basic difference is chili sauce has dehydrated onion,spices and garlic powder in it. Depo!!!

    You are right-they are both tomato-based and the general distinction is most people make chili sauce with more heat and stronger spices :O)

    You learn something new everyday! Thanks Depo for your info. I didn't know that. I think I'm making a recipe from the BB today for dinner, Oven Roasted BBQ Chicken that Texasrosell posted, and it calls for chili sauce and ketchup.
