  • Conversion question: Instant Rice vs just plain rice
I have several recipes that call for instant rice. I would rather use conventional cooked rice in these recipes.

I have yet to figure out:
    1. how much conventional rice vs the instant.
    2. How much to decrease the water in the recipe.

Is this clear as mud to you? It's crystal clear to me. :)

I'm hoping one of you have figured this out already.

1 cup of regular uncooked rice equals 3 c cooked.

Instant rice is 1 to 1. In other words, 1 c instant rice equals 1 cooked.

The next mystery. How much liquid to decrease.

To end up with 3 cups of cooked rice use:
2 cups instant rice and 2 cups water,
    or
1 cup regular rice and 2 cups water (1 3/4 cups water works OK if you have a tight fitting lid on your pan and cook for 15 minutes).

So, to get the same number of servings, you can use the same amount of liquid in the recipe but only half the amount of regular rice in place of the minute rice. Cook on a low heat for 15 to 20 minutes and keep pan covered.

1/2 cup of uncooked instant rice equals 1 cup cooked rice

1 cup uncooked regular rice = 3 cups cooked rice

Instant rice is actually pre-cooked rice.

When making a recipe that originally calls for uncooked instant rice, I used regular rice. I cook the rice and add it to the recipe at the same time the recipe calls for the instant rice.

If the recipe calls for 1/2 cup instant rice (which results in 1 cup of cooked rice), I substitute one cup of cooked regular rice.
