REC: Classic Goulash

    Classic Goulash
    4-6 Servings

    1 T. vegetable oil
    1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
    1/2 med. green pepper, chopped
    1 small onion, chopped
    1/2 lb. fresh mushrooms, quartered
    1 jar, 28 oz. spaghetti sauce or your own homemade
    1 pkg. 8 oz elbow macroni cooked according to pkg. directions
    1 t. salt
    1 t. black pepper
    1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

    1. Preheat oven 375 degrees

    2. In a large skillet, heat the oil over med. heat Add the ground beef, bell pepper,onion and mushrooms and cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring to crumble the beef, until no pink remains, drain excess liquid.

    3. ADD the remaining ingredients, except the cheese; mix well. Place in a 2 1/2 quart casserole, cover and bake for 22 to 25 minutes.

    4. Remove casserole from the oven, uncover and top with the mozzarella cheese. Bake uncovered for about 5-7 minutes or until heated through an cheese is melted.

    Thanks, Mary! This sounds great. I'm going to substitute olive oil for the veg oil. It's better for you, and adds to the flavor. I love olive oil. I hear if you use that instead of veg oil in brownie mixes, it tastes better. I've never tried it though!

    I use olive oil. Olive oil isn't supposed to be artery cloggy.

    I hope you enjoy the recipe, I love goulash, it is one of my families favorities.

    Mary,this recipe sounds great and I will make it myself.

    I have to say,the word "Classic" is not right, since it is not a classic Goulash. The classic Goulash is Hungarian and made with beef stew meat and paprika and served with spaetzle. It is a soup.

    Sounds good to me too Renate.  Maybe it is an American Thing. My mother always  made hers with ground beef and Macaroni.
