BOY-OH-BOY !!!! Has this ever been a subject around our house for some 25 years. My husband, who is now 75 years old, was raised on and farmed for the better part of his life. He transplanted himself in the Pacific Northwest in the later years, but the farmer is still planted in him to say the least. I was never so confused in my life when he wanted "DINNER" at the noon-hour. Dinner to me was the last meal of the day. Asking if he wanted meat, potaoes and gravey, he replied "that would be nice". NICE !!! I was no where's near ready to start a meal like that, but being the new bride, I rushed to get something impressive on the table. When it came time for "MY" Dinner time (5:30) I again put a large but impressive meal on the table only to hear, "you did not have to go to all that bother, I am not that hungery" My feeling were scorched to ashes. Well I guess you know the next day thing were done my way. After a long talk about which meal was which we came to an understanding of sorts which still haunt me till this very day.

CandyK...Funny you should ask this. After 43 years of marriage we still cannot agree on this.

    DH has...breakfast, dinner, and supper

    I have...breakfast, lunch, and dinner

DH will say something like..."Are the kids coming for supper?"

I will answer with, "They are coming for dinner."

He gets so mad and will come back with, "Just tell me what time of the day you are expecting them." I just love it...guess we are both too stubborn to change...at least it keeps us communicating. LOL

When I was growing up, we had:
    Breakfast
    Dinner
    Supper

In our house now we have
    Breakfast
    Lunch
    Supper

"Dinner" is something we have on holidays or if we are going out to "dinner".

Supper is the cozy meal at home.

    Continued:
I have always got to ask if he means dinner at noon or at 5:30. If he wants a bite to eat (him) or a snack (me) between breakfast and lunch (which is his dinner). I do find that a heavier meal earlier in the day is much healthier for us. Breakfast has never been to much of a quandry for us except that he can not eat right away after getting up. Takes him a good two hours to ready for it. To use to doing those chores before eating his first meal of the day.

    Him:
Breakfast: (after the chores are done)
A bite to eat: (between breakfast and dinner)
    Dinner: (at the noon-hour)
A bite to eat: (between dinner and supper)
Supper: (the last meal of the day and much lighter then the noon time meal.

    Myself:
    Breakfast:
A piece of fruit: (to tied me over till lunch)
Lunch: (something cold during the summer and hot during the winter)
A hand full of nuts (to help me out till dinner)
Dinner: The last meal of the day

MY family back on the farm, where I grew up, call it breakfast, dinner, supper, well I married a "city slicker" and he and his family call it breakfast, lunch and dinner. So when I tell my family in S.C. that we will be there by dinner time, they think we will be there in the middle of the day. They have learned after 32 years what I mean.Brunch to us is a really late breakfast(10 am or later).

    Breakfast
    Lunch
    Dinner

Anything in between is a snack, or a little something to nibble on.

At the holidays, I sometimes prepare brunch (ealier than lunch, but not as early as breakfast). Much easier to prepare brunch for the family, then a really big lunch.

Other times of the year, brunch is a late breakfast, or an early lunch. :-)

To me, Supper = Dinner (and I'm just confused if someone uses these terms to mean lunch!)

second breakfast--kids have named this from Lord of the Rings :)
    lunch
    snack
dinner or supper (whichever rolls off my tongue first)

    Brunch -- mid-morning
Lunch OR Dinner -- mid-day (Dinner on Sunday's and holidays)
    Supper Or Dinner--
-- Supper is the lighter evening meal
-- Dinner is the larger evening meal

  • RE: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, What do you call meals
    Morning: Breakfast
    Midday: Lunch*
    Evening: Supper**

    * On holidays and Sundays, this is dinner
** If I'm having guests or eating out, this one is dinner

Actually, since it's usually just me, it's morning snack, midday snack, evening snack, bedtime snack. And, I eat it wherever I happen to feel comfortable at the moment.

At our house, we have some combination of the following meals (lol).

    Breakfast -- morning only

Brunch -- late-morning to early afternoon and only when entertaining or eating out

Lunch OR Dinner -- mid-day (lunch a smaller meal; dinner on Sundays or holidays)

Supper OR Dinner-- evening (Supper is smaller and follows dinner; dinner is larger and follows brunch or lunch)
