I found a recipe for my bread machine but it calls for wheat bran. I looked in my grocery store, but only found wheat germ and different flours. Do I need a specialty store for this or is it the same thing?

Nope, if I remember my home ec right from high school and it was many moons ago...the bran is the outside of the wheat kernel and the germ is the inside of the kernel. It seems like there was a third part, but I have no clue what that would have been.

Sherry is correct. For the small amount needed in the recipe you can substitute wheat germ for the bran.

I caught a cold and didn't get to make the bread yet, but thank you for the help with the substitution. My local health food store has wheat bran at $1.25/lb.
