FRIDAY: What's Cookin'? 11/20/2009

Good morning friends .

Have you ever dreamed that you were up and starting the day already and then realized that you were only dreaming? Well that was me this morning lol.

DD throat is still a little sore but she's feeling alot better and eating more .

I forgot to mention that last week DH got the part for our oven (the ignitor) and it is now fixed . We will have Thanksgiving at our house but w/ a few less people as some family members are traveling this year.

I'm going food shopping today to put some turkey breasts in the freezer and to pick up a spiral ham. I'll get the fresh turkey and veggies on Tuesday. I'll decide on what's for dinner while I'm there.

DD has been taking piano lessons but we've had no piano to practice on. While shopping one day I saw an ad in the store window that someone was selling a piano for $75.00. Well we bought it. Yesterday DH, my brother and a friend picked it up and brought it home. It does need to be tuned but it works and DD can practice. Maybe I'll take lessons and learn since I've always wanted to.

Since the economy’s a mess, I decided to hold a drawing to giveaway some of the items that I sew in hopes of helping 12 people out with their gift list this holiday season....even if it's a gift for YOU!

I’ll be giving away the following (the pictures are just an example of each item, not necessarily the exact item, fabric-wise, that will be given away):

2 Insulated Casserole Carriers. The carriers hold a 9x13 pan and are composed of three layers – two of decorative fabrics, one of a dense insulating material. They will keep your foods either hot or cold!

4 Baked Potato Bags. The bag holds one to four medium-sized potatoes and is used to cook your potatoes in the microwave. The potato will be well done on the inside, yet moist, and the skin remains tender! From what I’ve been told – sweet potatoes and a small squash cook equally as well in the bag.

2 Over-The Shoulder Comfort Packs. These are handy for those stress-filled days when your shoulders are up to your ears! Just heat in the microwave and the flaxseed-filled channels will take care of the rest. Non-scented.

2 Pairs of Lounge/Sleep Pants. These are available in Women’s sizes ranging from XS (size 4) up to XL (size 18-20). These will be made out of flannel with an elastic waist and a ribbon bow on the front.

I will be paying all of the postage to get the items to the winners and the fabric choices will be mine.

Hope + Change, the 11/20/09 edition

The big news with which to start today's thread is, of course, the upcoming vote on the healthcare bill that is scheduled for this Saturday night. This isn't a vote that would pass the bill, but is just a procedural vote on whether to proceed with debate on it. The vote is scheduled for Saturday night at 8 pm, and of they vote to go ahead with debate that would probably not begin until after the Thanksgiving recess. And, naturally, the Republicans are expected to filibuster at every opportunity, so this could get very interesting.

There's an article here that explains a little about the differences between the Senate and House bills, and some of what is likely to occur in the Senate as they try to move ahead with the bill:

And while this isn't specifically related to current events, it's still something I'd like to mention... on this date, November 20, 2009, we should be celebrating Robert F. Kennedy's 84th birthday. Sadly, he's already been gone for 41 years. RFK is the political figure most responsible for my shift from the conservative views I held until the mid-80s to the progressive/liberal thinking I embrace today. I happened to read a couple of biographies about him, and then started doing some serious thinking and more reading, and everything fell into place. So in honor of RFK, here are a couple of passages from him that have always struck a chord with me:

Let no one be discouraged by the belief there is nothing one man or woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills--against misery and ignorance, injustice and violence... Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Grey's Anatomy last night

It went through Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years in that one hour show!

I guess that means there will be specials and other things on till into Jan?

When I realized this, I started feeling kind of cheated. They couldn't even devote one show to Christmas but rushed through the holidays?

Chocolate Toffee Cheese Ball

8 oz cream cheese softened
1 stick butter softened
1/4 tsp vanilla
3/4 c powdered sugar
2 tbsp brown sugar
3/4 c mini chocolate chips
1/2 c English toffee bits.
(about 1/3 cup pecans)

Mix cream cheese and butter and vanilla. Stir in sugars and fold in chips and toffee. Refrigerate 2-3 hours. Form into ball and roll in chopped pecans.

She suggested if you wanted to thin the mixture with milk or Kaluha you would have a dip for fruits or graham cracker sticks.

This is excellent and you will be making it again and again, I promise.

Arrests Made In Ring That Sold HUMAN FAT

Peruvian authorities say they have arrested four members of a gang that specialized in selling fat obtained from dead humans.

Officials are investigating the disappearance of at least 60 people who may have been killed by gang members in two mountainous states in central Peru, the nation's attorney general said in a release Wednesday.

The four suspects have been charged with murder.

Two of the suspects were arrested November 3 as they left a transport business with a plastic container with human fat in it.

The fat was sold in Peru and Europe and used for commercial purposes, Peruvian officials said.

Pap test being pushed back

The news has it that they think women under 30 should only have cervical testing every two years instead of annual. Over 30 every three years. They are finding the early start and annual testing has caused preterm delivery. They said that this won't be met with so much rage as the breast thing was. It's on the internet if you want to look up.Start age 21 ,or three years after becoming sexually active.I think as years go by they'll see allot of damage has been done by things done to the body. From X rays to pills and shots. We live longer but with so many more health problems. The old immune system is tampered with so much no wonder

Prayer for Health Care

A dear friend of mine shared a prayer she wrote for health care and was kind enough to give me permission to share it here with all of you. She makes some very poignant points that I feel should be shared. Here goes:

Prayer for Health Care

Lord, we know that you must be aggrieved at the thought of so many people in the world who suffer from denial of access to the healing arts. As a Healer Yourself, you showed unconditional compassion to so many of us humans who desperately needed to be restored to health in order to better praise and glorify Your holy name.

You did not refuse care to the leper with a terrible pre-existing condition.

You did not insist that the blind have vision care in their policies.

You made the lame walk again without demanding they turn over their entire savings for surgery or prosthetic limbs.

Your mother Mary would have been kicked out of the stable after 24 hours under our current system, never able to receive the Gifts of the Magi.

The distressed found succor within Your warm embrace, without being referred to community mental health or substance abuse clinics with hopelessly long waiting lists for quick med checks and little guidance.

Lord, we have tried using the power of prayer to cure our loved ones, and sometimes it seemed like that worked. Unfortunately, as you know by their presence in Your Heavenly abode, prayer was often not enough. You gave our medical professionals skill and intelligence, and You hoped that we would find a way as a people to let them make use of their great gifts for the benefit of all.

It must frustrate You when our dedicated health professionals, who received Your grace and wisdom while preparing for their arduous careers, are not permitted to treat the working poor. You must shed tears when a hospital turns away an ambulance because they refuse to accept uninsured patients, or they accept that person only until they are ”stabilized,” then sent to a charity hospital with inadequate resources to provide affordable care. And when the bills come in for the meager treatment they did receive, we know that You hear their despair.

It must break Your compassionate heart when Your flock is forced to choose between shelter, heat, food, or medical treatment.

When the people in charge find a way to harm us in Your name, when they claim to be “Christians” yet base their compassion upon the size of a person’s employer, this must provoke the righteous anger You showed towards the money-changers in the Temple.

Please, Lord, soften the hearts of your followers. Make them think about how their attitudes are anything but Christ-like. Heal their cold spirits as You provide your healing graces to us all.

We implore you, Lord, please hear our prayer!

(literally) when you have to take a valium to keep your head frorm spinning. I had a horrible case of vertigo and antivert never works for me so valium it was. I don't know if it was a small attack of Meniere's disease or not. I called my doctor and her nurse sait it would be ok if I took one. Does anyone else have Meniere's?
