    apple cider

My husband is planning to make apple cider next weekend. Can anyone offer some help and advice on how to do this? We went to the orchard yesterday and picked up drop apples....ida red, golden delicious and rome. He has a small press to use and muslin cloth to strain it with. I appreciate any help with this subject, thanks in advance!

Sounds like you're well on your way already. We used to make cider every year using a cider press. You put the apples in the top section that chops them up as you turn the crank...they fall into the cheese cloth "bucket" - once it's full, close it up, putting the wooden top (that comes with the press) on top of the cloth. Begin to turn the crank wheel, which begins applying pressure to the apples mixture squeezing the juice out until there's nothing left but pulp...the juice drains into a clean bucket or container that you have set up. Drink away!!! We have always had our cider fresh...we never pasturized....it can also be frozen in jugs...just be sure to leave space for when it expands during the freezing process. Hope this helps...

Oh, yea, thanks that helps a lot! How do you get the sediment out of it though? Is there a way to filter it to get it clear? My hubby made some last year and this sounds like the way he did it....but his was really dark and when it sat for a time, it had a layer of dirt or something (???) in the bottom of the jug. He has the cheesecloth bag and he bought some muslin cloth to use as a filter but he's not sure how to do that. Thank you for replying to my question!!
