OT ?? about Black and Decker Rice Maker

Does anyone have this rice maker and are you happy with it? Wal-mart has them for $20. I don't need ANOTHER gadget sitting around if I'm really not going to use it. :) Thanks for your help!

I have had my Black and Decker rice and veggie steamer for probably 10 years now, use it 2 to 3 times a week, mainly for vegetables, and it is still working great. Would highly recommend it. I have a file card taped inside a cupboard door with a list of the different veggies and rice too, that I steam and the length of time I steam them. So much easier than getting out the book, plus I like some things cooked a litle longer or a little less time than the book shows. Also makes perfect steamed rice.

I agree with Conloo..and I have the same one. I use it just for rice but it does make perfect rice for use in recipes. I keep it in a handy cupboard with the book open to the rice page so it is easy when I need to cook rice. No watching is the best feature...plus perfect rice.

I have one I purchased from a Korean store ... not black & decker ... but, rice usually takes about 20 min to cook .. .same as on top of the stove. The advantage is you avoid spillovers and you don't have to remember to turn the fire off.

Things to look for in a rice cooker:
    (1) TEFLON pan inside. I've had some that I just threw away because it was too much trouble to clean. Make sure you can just wipe it out with a napkin and don't have to scrub.
    (2) A "warmer" ... You want it to quit cooking when the rice is done, but you want the rice to still stay warm (without burning, of course). This makes it nice because you can turn it on before you go ... uhm, shopping ... *smile* and come home to dinner ... provided you also turned on the crockpot! Nice to just walk in the house and fix a plate. Also good for when someone has to work late and you can keep dinner hot with the crockpot and rice cooker.
    (3) In my experience, the BROWN rice needs a little longer time. The cooker will flip off to warm, but an extra 5-10 min on warm finishes cooking the brown rice.

My Black and Decker has a clear plastic container with holes in the bottom, used for steaming vegetables. Then there is a smaller plastic basket that sets inside of it to use for rice. It isn't too big, can only hold up to 1 cup of raw rice. Wouldn't really be big enough for a large family, but for me it is ideal. Rice takes arond 40 minutes to steam, but like I said, mine is older, and maybe the newer machines cook faster. The continer washes out easily.
Like KaRoh said, you avoid spillovers, and clock watching. Same with the veggies. Put them in, set the timer, and you don't have to think about them agin until the bell dings.

    Hey, Silly Question??
Can you make Rice a Roni in it too or would you mix up flavorings in it later?

Thanks a bunch for the great info. I think I'll be checking out the details about making sure it's a teflon pan and making a purchase. Now, I'll have to start getting some different rice recipes to try. :)

I've never tried making Rice-A-Roni in mine, but I do make Lime-Cilantro rice in it for my burritos.
