    Apple Cider

Hello from Finland! I crave some good old American apple cider, but here the ciders are sweet and usually alcoholic. Can someone explain to me exactly what is apple cider, and what I could substitute for it? The closest I have come so far is fresh apple juice. But I would like to have the real thing. Thanks.

    RE: Apple Cider

Apple Cider is actually the juice from pressed apples,, The Amish and other farmers around here will use several types of apples to get the flavors they want...A lot of the apples used are to small or not of quality to sell so they are used this way..Apple cider that is NOT pasturised will turn into vinegar, and get real wild in taste,, that is why they pasturise it..If YOU do get Real Apple Cider and it is in jugs loosen the caps of the jug so the fermenting gases can escape or they can explode (makeing a mess..To make apple Jack ( Hard cider , a little yeast was added as well as Sugar to make it palatable...AN APPLE PRESS LOOKS LIKE A SMALL BARREL WITH SLATS INSTEAD OF SOLID SIDES, AND HAS A CRANK TO APPLY THE PRESSURE REQUIRED TO GET THE BEST JUICING.

Thanks Loosenut! Your reply is most helpful. I know that there are so-called "juice stations" here where you can take your apples and have the juice pressed out. I'll do that next year instead of making my own apple juice with my special juice extractor - a special tiered pan which extracts the juice from fruits and berries with steam. Too late for this year, as I have harvested all my apples already. We are having the first snow just now!

Suomi--had a thought. Here in Michigan (we grow LOTS of apples!) the farmers have apples available in cold storage until at least Thanksgiving--perhaps you could buy an assortment (might take a nice leisurely weekend drive to get to a farm) and press them for cider.

Hope you come up with the perfect 'recipe.'

Thanks Patty613 for the idea. Maybe I'll just give it a try. I have lived 19 years outside of the USA, but it is still funny how a craving from my younger days hits now and again. Now, if only I could get American-style peanut butter over here! Suomi

Hi! You could try making your own peanut butter. 'Regular' peanut butter has peanuts in it, plus vegetable oil, sugar and salt.

I prefer my peanut butter with just peanuts and salt, and I can't find it here--the 'natural' and 'organic' peanut butters generally don't have salt! (at least not the 'crunchy' kind, which I prefer). The last jar I bought has no salt, but since I have to stir it anyway, I thought I'd add some salt when I start stirring and see if that's adequate.

Maybe someone would send you some for Christmas--it comes in plastic jars and pails these days! (glass is very hard to find, but I like the jars for re-use).
