The "K" on the package of Jell-o denotes that it is kosher. My mom gets Jewish publications and they have stated that Jell-o is kosher to use. Emes is one product that is made with seaweed and I believe Hains Co. also makes flavored vegetarian gelatin.

    Found this:

Gelatin is made from collagen, an animal protein. Collagen is extracted from the skin/bones of cows or pigs. It's soaked and cooked, then filtered, refined and evaporated. The finished product is gelatin.

The Torah prohibits only the meat of unkosher animals, but not the bones, horns or hoofs.

The Sages, however, forbade any bones, horns or hoofs which contain moisture. According to this, food made from unkosher bones is forbidden, unless the bones were completely dry.

But during the manufacturing of gelatin, the animal extract becomes totally inedible, such that even a dog will no longer eat it. Now, food which even a dog won't eat loses its status as food. Halachically, it's no different than stones or dirt which are you allowed to eat!

Based on this, some authorities permit gelatin from unkosher animals, since during the process the animal extract becomes unfit for even a dog. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, zatzal, rules otherwise. He writes that although the animal parts are inedible in the middle of the process, this inedible state is only temporary. Since at the end of the process the unkosher bones are 'resurrected' into an edible product, the original prohibition remains.

In the United States, almost all kashrut organizations accept the stricter opinion and do not endorse gelatin made from unkosher derivatives.

A dear friend of mine is a school teacher and she has children in her class that cannot have many foods because of gelatin. She said the mothers told her it comes from the hoofs of pigs so therefore is forbidden in their religion.

    marshmallows
    gummy bears
    sour cream in dips
cream cheese in dips or frostings
    bought cakes with icing
    or cakes made with mixes

and there were oodles of other items you wouldnt even think about ... I'll see if I can get the list from her.

My goodness look at what tamales are made from .... but they are delicious.

I haven't checked the Snopes site but they might consider fish as an animal.

Did I say someONE with more insight(knowledge) than us? Wow, what wealth of information. I know that I was enlightened and hope others were also. Thanks to all who have taken time to read and respond. I still like Jello-0, though, but will certainly look into the vegetarian type "gelatine" (although I too am not a vegetarian, but have - unsuccessfully attempted it). I never hurts to have a back-up system. Thank you all again. papi (formerly hija)

Papi, I am a vegetarian, and have found that Emes Kosher-Jel (I purchase mine at a natural foods store) can be substituted easily and satisfactorily for Jell-O gelatin. It is available unflavored and also in a wide selection of fruit flavors. The ingredient list includes, carageenan and locust bean gum - both of which are all vegetable products.
