Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1/4 cup granulated sugar
    1/8 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons chilled butter -- cut into small pieces
3 tablespoons chilled solid vegetable shortening
    1 egg
    1 tablespoon ice water
    Filling:
3 ounces (3 squares) semisweet chocolate -- melted
1/4 cup ground pecans (about 1 ounce)
    Glaze and Topping:
    3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
    2 tablespoons milk
    2 tablespoons seedless strawberry jam

In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, and salt. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut butter and shortening into flour mixture until coarse crumbs form. Mix together egg and water. Add egg mixture to flour mixture, 1 teaspoon at a time, tossing with a fork until a dough forms. Shape dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for several hours or overnight. Grease a baking sheet. Dust with flour; tap out excess. On a floured surface, using a floured rolling pin, roll dough into a 10-in. x 7-in. rectangle.

    RE: Chocolate-Strawberry Pastries

To prepare filling, spread melted chocolate evenly over dough to within 1/2-in. of edges. Sprinkle nuts over chocolate. Starting with a short side, fold dough in half over filling. Roll dough to a 1/2-in. thickness. Using a floured 3-in. round biscuit cutter, cut out 6 rounds. Cut each round in half. Fold edges under. Using the back of a spoon, make a slight indentation in top of pastries. Place pastries, 1 inch apart, on prepared baking sheet. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375'. Bake pastries until golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer baking sheet to a wire rack to cool. To prepare glaze, mix together confectioners' sugar and milk. Spread jam evenly over pastries. Spread glaze over jam. Let stand until set.
