    fresh fruit or canned fruit?

I just read this in an article about ways people are cutting back because of gas price increases.

My question is --- Is this family really saving money this way?

"We have stopped spending on things that aren't necessities, and we've been forced to halve our grocery bill. The kids no longer get fresh fruit or vegetables and no longer get turkey sandwiches. Now we buy only canned goods and the cheapest lunch meat possible. "

They may be saving a little bit of money, but at what cost? I found that by cutting way back on the junk food I buy, more is left for the good food. Sure, we all need a little bit of junk now and then, but if your family is like mine, they'd eat it all no matter how much you buy.

To me, there's no economy in cutting good nutrition out of the budget. In 30 years of marriage, of course we've had some tight times--but even so, I've never resorted to serving my family lunch meat--it's loaded with chemicals and fat.

Few things are cheaper than buying a whole turkey--and you get so many meals out of one--dinners, sandwiches, a big kettle of soup. A smart cookie could feed a family for a week on one turkey. I cannot imagine that it's even cheaper $$$wise to buy any kind of lunchmeat over a turkey. And if you get the free ones all the stores offer at Christmas and Easter.... well, you can't beat free.

And in my book, vitamin pills and dr's visits cost more than fresh fruit, vegetables and quality meats.

I was thinking the same way y'all do.

I do not can my own food but have always thought it was cheaper to cook from scratch. I've seen people on this board who talk about how much they save by cooking from scratch.

Also, as Roselle mentions the long term health affects.

    Cheap lunch meat - yuck

Yes, it takes extra effort but it seems the dollar savings would be greater.

Would that cheap lunch meat be Spam? If you are a wise shopper, you'll shop the ads, you can save lots of money by buying that way. If apples are on sale that week, you have apple what ever.

There are some things I don't sacrifice quality for. Food is tops on that list.

Lately I've been roasting a whole chicken about once a week. We (four adults) eat dinner off of it (roasted with fresh veggies), and then I make chicken salad with the leftover meat. That feeds us all again for lunch the next day and usually some for a snack on crackers. That's a $6 chicken feeding four people at least two meals. Lunchmeat at the Ingles deli is $8 and $9 per pound.

I have long thought there should be restrictions on what foods can be purchased with food stamps and WIC vouchers. I walk the cereal aisle at the grocery store and see "WIC Approved Item" on some of them. How can sugary cereal be better for a person than grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, eggs? And cereal is one of the most expensive things in the store!

A year or so ago, there was someone on this board complaining because her children were drinking all the milk and there was none for breakfast cereal. She also happened to be a stay-at-home mom.

I pointed out that unless I was truly penniless, I would never complain about my child drinking the milk, it's still a good deal even with higher prices. Also, if there was no milk for cereal, the COOK breakfast!

I know my parents had rough financial times when I was a kid but we were always allowed as much fruit and fruit juice as we wanted. We drank orange juice out of 8 ounce glasses, not little juice glasses. I was shocked as an adult to learn some people limited the amount of fruit juice their family drank.

Canned or fresh fruit?...I have heard that the nutritional value is the same whether canned or fresh. If it's cheaper to buy the canned, then by all means do so.

But as far as cheap lunch meat is concerned, well, it isn't cheap and is loaded with all kinds of icky chemicals that are really bad for us.

Oh, by the way, I happen to like olive loaf...have a sandwich made with some about once every other month.
