    dog biscuits

Taste of Home had a recipe for Cheddar Garlic Dog Biscuits. I misplaced mine, and the recipe is not in the recipe search section. Can anyone help?

Any and all dog biscuit recipes would be appreciated!

Last year I sold two cannisters of them at a charity auction for almost $200.00.

    Thank you!

Here it is. It is in the TOH Aug/Sept 03 issue

    submitted by Judy Hede
    Garlic Cheese Dog Biscuits

    1-1/4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    1/4 cup stick margarine, softened
    1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
    1 to 4 garlic cloves
    dash salt
    6 to 8 tablespoons milk

In a mixing bowl, beat the cheese and margarine. Add the floud, garlic and salt; mix well. Add enough milk to form a stiff dough. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire racks. Biscuits will harden as they cool. Makes 1-1/2 to 2 dozen depending on cookie cutter size

    RE: dog biscuits

I have made this one (posted originally by RedRaspberryGirl) and my dog likes it:

    Microwave Dog Biscuit Treats

From the very friendly folks at RecipeGoldmine.com

    I N G R E D I E N T S
    1 cup whole wheat flour
    3/4 cup dry milk
    1/4 cup cornmeal
    1/3 cup shortening
    1 tablespoon bouillon granules
    1/2 cup plain flour
    1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
    1 teasapoon sugar
    1 egg slightly beaten
    1/2 cup hot water

    I N S T R U C T I O N S
Combine flour, cornmeal, milk, oats and sugar. Cut in shortening. Add egg, bouillon and hot water. Knead 5 minutes.

Roll 1/2-inch thick and cut out into favorite shapes. Microwave at 50% power for 5 to 10 minutes, rotating plate. These don’t last long, so make a bunch.

    Peanut-Butter Puppy Biscuits

    1-1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
    1/2 cup wheat germ
    1/2 cup raisins
    1 Tbs. brown sugar
    1 cup milk
    1 cup chunky peanut butter

    Preparation:

Combine all ingredients and mix until smooth with a hand mixer that
is set on low speed. Knead the dough on a floured surface and roll
out to 1/3-inch thick. Cut out cookies using a bone-shaped cookie
cutter (available at home or pet stores). Place on a cookie sheet and
bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

Refrigerate or freeze the biscuits if you're going to keep them
    longer than three days.

    Homemade Dog Treats from Familyfun:

To make a batch, combine these ingredients:
    1 1/4 C. of grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound of softened corn oil margarine
    1 1/2 C. of whole wheat flour
    1 crushed garlic clove

Mix well. Add enough milk to form the dough into a ball, then cover
the ball with plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes. On floured
    board, roll out
the dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out bone shapes and bake on an
ungreased baking sheet at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until
    slightly
brown and firm. Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.

    Dog Breath Biscuits

    2 cup whole wheat flour
    1/2 cup cornmeal
2 Tablespoons dried spearmint or peppermint
    1/4 cup dried parsley
6 Tablespoons oil (I use olive)
    3/4 cup water

Mix all of the ingredients together. Roll out on a floured surface
to 1/4" thickness. Cut out with a cookie cutter or I use an old
olive oil lid which makes nice bite size treats. Bake at 350 for 40
minutes or until lightly brown. Turn off oven and let set several
hours. Store in the fridge in an airtight container.

    Dog Biscuits

    2 c Unsifted all-purpose flour
    1 1/4 c Shredded cheddar cheese
    2 cloves Garlic, finely chopped
    1/2 c Vegetable oil
4 1/2 tbsp Water (up to 5 tbsp)

Preheat oven to hot (400 degrees). Make a cardboard pattern of a dog
bone, 4 inches long or use a dog-bone cookie cutter. Combine flour,
cheese, garlic and vegetable oil in container of food processor.
Cover, whirl until mixture is the consistency of coarse meal. With
machine running, slowly add water until mixture forms a ball. Divide
dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll out each piece to 1/2" thickness.
    Cut out bones.
Transfer to ungreased cookie sheet. Do not re-roll scraps. Bake in
preheated hot oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until bottom of cookies
    are lightly
browned. Carefully transfer bones to wire rack to cool completely.
    Refrigerate in airtight container.

    Basic Dog Treats

    1 3/4 C whole wheat flour
    1 1/4 C oatmeal
    1 1/2 T vegetable oil
    1 C warm water

    Options to add:

    1/3 C finely grated cheese
    1/4 C peanut butter

Mix the dry ingredients together. Then mix the wet ingredients
together. Blend both mixtures until a firm dough is achieved. Shape
dough into an oblong roll, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for an
hour. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Lightly grease sheet pan. Slice
roll into 1cm thickness, place on sheet pan and bake for about an
hour or until treats are done. I usually check them at 45 minutes,
and then every five minutes so they don't scorch. Don't forget to
let them cool before giving to your best friend.

    RE: dog biscuits

    Hi All,

Reading the recipes for dog biscuits, One of them had raisins in it, I have read that grapes can kill a dog, and especially if is small, also Garlic breath? , also read that quanties? of garlic are also bad for dogs, although dog foods have it in it, but they know how much is to much, I would be careful with those items.
I couldn't let this go by without a warning.

    Just a note of caution!

Recently, it has been noted that raisens have been found to be toxic to some dogs and it can be dangerous.

Please do not put raisens in your dog treats even if it's never bothered your dogs before.

    Try using shredded carrots instead.

I wish I had a source to tell you where I found this info, it's been a while and I can't remember. It might have been while at my vets. They have posters telling what over the counter meds, foods, and plants are dangerous to cats/dogs.

I know there are also breed related troubles too. Like collies are known to be sensitive to a certain drug commonly found in heartworm preventative medicine. For that reason, I have to stick to Intercepter brand of heartworm med for my collie & my sheltie. Shelties can react the same way and it can be fatal!

Onions are very toxic to dogs too as well as Amonium AD, but Pepcid AC & Pepto is okay.

My collie recently was neutered and there were some complications so he ended up having major surgery to look for one that wasn't where it was supposed to be. He then had a reaction to the sutures inside (the self disolving ones) and then developed an infection. He also had a reaction to 2 different antibiotics that were both in the penicillin family. We are keeping track of all the meds and the kind of sutures so we'll know if we ever have to have surgery again.

When they are members of your family, you can never be too cautous!
