    Old Fashioned Coffee Cake

My husband remembers a wonderful cinnamon coffee cake his mother used to make. All my mother-in-law remembers is she used to make a bread dough, poke holes in the dough and pour a milk/sugar/cinnamon solution on top. I would love to surprise my husband with this coffee cake. Anyone have a recipe similar? Thanks!

I know it's been quite a few months, but I just found this. I don't know if it's the one you're looking for or not, but it looks good.

    Here is one:

    RIVEL KUCHEN-GERMAN COFFEE CAKE

    1 loaf frozen bread dough,
    thawed

    1st Topping:
1/4 c. cream (can also use
    undiluted canned milk)
    1 egg
    2 Tbsp. sugar
    2 Tbsp. flour

    2nd Topping:
    1 c. flour
    6 Tbsp. butter, melted
    2 Tbsp. sugar

Roll out dough about 1/2-inch thick, place in greased
flat pan, press dough out with fingers into corners and sides
so pan is covered all over with dough. Let rise about 30
    minutes.
Beat together with fork all ingredients of 1st topping
    and spread on dough.
Mix together all ingredients 2nd topping. This will
form into small lumps as streusel. Spread over 1st topping.
Sprinkle with a little sugar. Bake in oven at 375º for 30 minutes.

    RE: Old Fashioned Coffee Cake

Hi everyone -- I've been lurking for a long time and couldn't resist responding to this request. My PA Dutch mother-in-law would sometimes make a cake similar to the one requested, but would use a potato dough base. She called it a Moravian Sugar Cake. Here's her recipe:

    MORAVIAN SUGAR CAKE
    3 eggs
    1 tsp salt
    1 C shortening
    1 C sugar
1 C cold cooked mashed potatoes
    1 C warm water (110-115 degrees)
    2 pkgs yeast
    4 C flour (approximately)
    Cream or half-and-half
    Brown sugar
    Cinnamon
    Butter
Dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside. Cream sugar, shortening and salt; add eggs and mashed potatoes. Add yeast to mixture. Stir in enough flour to make a stiff dough. Let rise til doubled (about 1 1/2 hrs). On a floured board, work out into 2 cakes, each 12-15" square. Place each on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise again. Punch holes all around dough about 1 1/2" apart. Cover heavily with cream, then sprinkle heavily with brown sugar, then cinnamon, and dot with small chunks of butter. The holes will catch some of the sugar and butter mixture and hold it in the cake. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for about 10 minutes or until top is golden and cake is done. Hope you like it -- Addie

Oh, cookinkitty! Moravian Sugar Cake is wonderful. I used to make it many years ago and forgot all about it. Thanks for posting this and reminding me of it.
