    I am making a Michaels run today!!! Hold me back... all I need are a couple shadow boxes and some glue!!!!

    I have something in my head that I want to try and make for a couple of dear friends for Christmas...

    I want to cut a piece of marine chart for the background... then glue a photo of their boat on the top I will "hang" a VERY small fish net, in my head this looks so cool it may not when I get it done...*LOL*!!!!



    without enough sleep we all become tall two year olds!

    i crochet afghans, they're not the best but i give them to family and such. i have started a simple patchwork quilt for our new great nephew born the 17th of september. haven't finished it yet, all i have to do is trim it and put the binding on. i've always wanted to make quilts. me and sewing, i know enough to get into trouble, but i love fabric and fabric stores. this year for Christmas for the nieces and their families, they are all getting the recipes in a jar. i have a whole lot of quart canning jars i never use. last year they all got homemade jams and jellies. the year before that i made the kids pillows. i also love to print out pictures and put them in pretty frames.

    i forgot, i learned how to embroidery a long long time ago. haven't done it for years. but would love to learn to cross stitch. a friend of ours has offered to teach me. also at the state fair this year, i always go look at the quilts and this one girl used a computer program and printed out old photos on muslin and quilted it and embroidered the name under it, like a family tree thing. i'd love to do that. so i'm going to try one of these days. it was so neat.

    Have 7 quilt tops all completed and took 3 to have them stippled. Will use these three as Xmas presents. The other 4 I will put together as comforters(tied) with a fluffier filler. Do have to make a few wallhangings as gifts also and 3 baby quilts. Have cut 4 place mat sets with center runners need to sit down and put them together.

    I have spent the day alone cutting out pieces for my big applique quilt while I watch Project Runway Season 1 on DVD.

    Such satisfying therapy!

    I always thought embroidery and cross stitch were the same? What is the difference? just curious

    Cross stitch is making a design using mainly little x's --- cross's if you wish

    Embroidery has many different stitches to create different looking textures

    shadowtails, cross-stitching uses only stitches that actually cross each other and maybe some uncrossed lines too here and there. Not only that, but there is a special material just for cross-stitching. For lack of a better description, it has an open "waffled" type appearance.

    But embroidery work can be done on any type of material, even bath towels. It is mostly done on linen (as far as I've seen) and there are so many different and beautiful stitches that can be made (including knots). Satin-stitch is my favorite and as the name implies it imparts a satin sheen to the finished article. :)

    And now to ask the question that I came to ask originally.

    I've seen a few bags (purses) that have been made by crocheting recycled shopping bags. (like walmart bags that have been twisted into yarn). There are some tacky ones, but I've also seen some that are pretty nice looking. I guess it depends on the person that makes them. The ones that I've seen [that I like] are completely crocheted-- even the handles. But I did see some that I thought were a little tacky. They had brass (or gold plated something) doodads to attach the handle to the purse. As Tim Gunn from Project Runway might say with disdain, "It was a LOT of look." lol

    First of all, does anyone have any CLUE what I'm talking about? And secondly, if you do: Do you have any idea where I might find a pattern?

    I like useful crafts like sewing and knitting.

    I enjoy pencil drawing, oil painting and at one time made linoleum block prints.

    One year I made pen & ink Christmas cards, featuring my two cats having some Christmas fun, with a hand lettered greeting, "From our house to yours..." No two cards were exactly alike, but they were a hit.

    Also, I googled crochet plastic bags and a lot of different sites came up. Take your pick! and have fun. Looks like maybe a useful thing to do with all those bags. My guess is that it would last forever!

    thanks for the difference between the two. I've cross stitched small items along time ago. Embroidery sounds alot nicer. Wish they would offer a class like that at Michaels. I'm going to have to mention it.

    Have any of you every used that small embroidery hand held machine? Looks easy.

    thumbelina, that sounds cool. I'm very interested in that. I'm going to go take a look see online....
