Hi! A Questions About Fun Fur Scarves Please..

Does any one here make them and sell them at craft shows, and if so, how much do they charge? My niece has asked me to sell mine at a fundraiser their church/school is having. I make mine with two strands, one fun fur, one worsted weight in a matching or contrasting color. They are sooo warm when made that way, but I don't know how much to ask.

Could any one offer some advice? Thanks a bunch!

I made those last year and I just love them. Sorry, but I've never sold them.
Maybe figure in how much the yarn cost and then check out sites on line to see how much they are charging?

Thank you ShadowTails, I thought about checking elsewhere and then forgot about it! I'll give it a try.

anywhere from 8-25. I know that isn't much help, but it really depends on your location, the economy in your area, a nice cold day vs a warm day and how many other people are also selling them. I was at a show today and didn't see many people buying scarves, but it was a beautiful warm day, very few people even had coats on.
I'll be interested in hearing how you do.

I love making the fun fur scarves too.
I saw some at a Christmas church bazaar, either last year or the year before and they were selling for $20. So I would say at least $20, or as someone said depending on your location.
Let us know what price you decided on and good luck.

you may want to check out the sale bins at the dollar stores, big lots etc. I have seen lots of fun fur for a dollar there. Have a plan of what you will do with the scarves if they don't sell. Seem like my area these scarves went big about three years ago and now have lost their appeal. don't want to discourage you, just don't want you to be disappointed.
the best advice I could give you is to know your audience, is it young girls, their mothers or grandmothers and adjust your color choices.

RE: Hi! A Questions About Fun Fur Scarves Please..

Thank you all for the helpful advice.

I think I have a little advantage in that I'm the only one there with handmade scarves. The theme is Ladies Night Out and vendors such as Mary Kay, home jewelry show vendors, and even a local beauty school is offering free haircuts for a donation to the school.

I also wondered if the fun fur scarves appeal has fizzled. I have seen similar ones at Walgreens for about $10. In my opinion, they aren't nearly as nice or thick and warm like mine. Yikes, I hope that didn't sound wrong!

If they don't sell, well, there's always Christmas coming up and I also thought about donating them to a local charity for those in need of winter clothing items.

I think I'll probably price them between $15 and $20.

Thanks again for all your help, ladies. The show is November 14th, I'll let you know how it goes:)

I am way more optomistic for you, that type of show might be a much better forum and I think you should charge between 15-20. Might want to think of some child size ones, in pink and girly colors, grandmas love to shop for their little grand daughters.
I used to make mine with the one strand of each, then once I got used to it I started to make them with two strands of fun fur. I love the look of the ones made with the tan colored fun fur. Actually I prefer to use the Boa type yarn rather than the longer haired fun fur.

    benchsitter-

I too like the tan fun fur, it's kind of a champagne color? I make it with a matching worsted weight and it's so warm.

Actually, I've never made one with 2 strands of fun fur. I couldn't even tell you what got me started pairing it with worsted weight.

I've tried other variations of fun fur, but I prefer the finished look of the fun fur.

I am planning on making some smaller, child size scarves. I've got some great colors for that.

Have you ever tried to embellish the scarves with anything? I've thought about it, but haven't taken the time to experiment.

RE: Hi! A Questions About Fun Fur Scarves Please..

Well, I did the show last night. Not bad for my first time. I sold half of what I brought and took an order for one.

I got a couple of comments like, "oh, my MIL makes these". Which I was afraid the fun fur scarves might be overdone. However, most everybody liked them and commented on how thick and soft they were. The average price was $15.00. I sold the two higher priced ones I made for $18.00. They went pretty fast.

The best part! A lady there was selling handbags and accessories and she wanted to take a few scarves and market them with her handbags! She is associated with the school so I felt good about giving them to her.

But wait! That's not all....I was buying yarn at WalMart today and was wearing one of my scarves. Two clerks commented on how pretty it was and I told them I sell them. She asked if I had a card (oops, don't have any!) but I did give her an addy I set up for taking orders.

    Just wanted to update
    everyone...thanks for the support!

glad you did well, I was thinking about you. I meant to tell you that adding a small amt of the fun fur to some magic gloves gives you a "set" which could increase your profit margin

Hi benchsitter- I had to run after I posted and just now had a minute to hop back on.

I was thinking the same thing today. I need to look into that. I'm sure it can be done pretty reasonably. Thanks!
