Chocolate Decadence Cake-A Cake Ball on Steriods! Fun!

And Brother is it good too!

My neice is requesting this one for NY's Eve. She loved it when I made it back in the summer. It is just lots of yummy. gooey fun to mix that cake up with all that Ganache and then pack it into the Springform....and talk about rich! Actually, since I made this, the cake balls became all the rage here on the board, and this one is like a Cake Ball on steriods! Try it, you'll love it! And Double that Ganache!

    CHOCOLATE DECADENCE CAKE

This fabulous cake is so fun to make! First you bake a two layer cake mix cake, then combine chunks of cake with a rich chocolate ganache to form a thick fudge-like mixture. This is chilled, unmolded, and coated with more ganache for a chocoholics dream.

1 pkg. two layer devil's food cake mix
    1-1/3 cups water
1/2 cup safflower or peanut oil
    3 eggs
16 oz. good quality semisweet chocolate, chopped
    1-1/3 cups heavy cream
    1/4 cup unsalted butter

Prepare cake mix as directed on package, using water, oil and egg measurements above. Bake in two greased and floured 8" round pans at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Cool in pans 10 minutes, remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
Melt chocolate in medium saucepan over low heat. Heat cream and butter together in a large saucepan until it boils. Pour cream over chocolate and beat with wire whisk until smooth. Cool 20 minutes.

Line 9" springform pan with waxed paper. Cut cooled cake into cubes. Place cake cubes in large mixer bowl. Pour 1-1/3 cups ganache over the cake cubes and mix on low speed with an electric mixture until texture is like thick fudge. Spread evenly in prepared pan, smoothing top. Freeze for one hour. Unmold cake, place on serving plate, remove waxed paper, and coat cake on the top and sides with remaining chocolate ganache. Store in refrigerator. 16-20 servings

Notes: I doubled the ganache to make sure I had plenty and I used aluminum foil to line the pan with, easier than waxed

    The Ganache is Fabulous!

Oh, Susie, it is SO good. Very, very rich. You can only eat a small slice. Charity made me promise to make extra ganache. I dunno what she plans for it, but there is a gleam in her eye. I imagine she's visualizing chocolate covered cookies, ice cream, etc, LOL. You know how those craving things go, although mine ran more toward yogurt for some reason.

Please let me know what Charity had up her sleeve! I'm not thinking yogurt, though, lol!

Maybe I could tackle this for NYD dinner...or Steve's b-day -- well, no, that won't work cuz he can't have chocolate...oh, bother!

Star, This sounds absolutely wonderful. I know the cake balls are yummy but they are also messy little things~  This is so much neater and easier~  Thanks and Happy New Year~  Wishing you and yours the best in 2008~  JanieParty!!!

Aw, CtC, that was very nice. You're very welcome and thank you for the compliment.

Happy New Year to you and Miss Janie and Sweet Linda.

I agree Janie, this is less messy, but you get a very similiar flavor, actually it's BETTER, because it's a homemade ganache that is so good!

I have my Cake Ball on Steriods packed into the pan and in the freezer now and two containers of ganache ready, one for the cake and one for my neice....she'll be a happy camper.

OMG!  This sounds too good!  It will have to be a very special occasion with LOTS of guests before I make this....so that everyone will eat it and I won't be tempted to eat the whole thing myself!  This will definitely go under my "Special Recipes" section!

    Thanks very much!

    You're very welcome!

The thing about this cake, other than being a neat idea and lots of fun to make, is that it comes out looking really elegant. I serve it on a crystal cake stand. It is only about 2 inches tall after you unmold it from the pan, and then you pour all that wonderful ganache over it, and the chocolate is drizzling down the sides and it just looks like you have created a gourmet cake.

It was a big hit at dinner last night once again.
