Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

I have to agree that writing everything down is the way to go.  I am less likely to eat something I shouldn't when I know I am going to have to write it down.  Also try to figure out the calories you are eating for a few days.  It is a real eye opener to see how many calories you are actually eating in a day!  I have been really watching what I eat since Christmas and wasn't noticing much change but today I am down 2 lbs!  I am planning on going out for drinks after work with a friend/coworker so I hope I don't blow it too bad!

That is a really great site Morningdove - thanks for posting it.  Come back and chat sometime!

Texas I'm sending good wishes to you that your doctors visits go well.

    Better get to work.

Jet,you are amazing, that you lost 10 lbs. or more.It took me 1 1/2 years to loose 12 lbs. I only had salads or Slimfast and a banana for lunch, but I riuned my stomach and had to stop and I gained it all back. But maybe I am twice your age and later on it is harder to loose weight.Since I was always underweight most of my life,I was happy to gain weight, but now it went into the wrong direction. Sorry, I told this story now for the fourth time.====================================================== Berny great, that you lost weight also. Pretty soon,we have to give this Corner a different name, "The Weight Loosers-" or "The Slim Ladies- Corner".Would't this be great==================================================== Morningdove, maybe we still can find all the abbreviations or did they disappear? DD is dear daughter,DS is dear son, etc.======================================= I have a question: If I am looking for a recipe, lets say from Twinkle,I know the title, how can I pulled it up? I can not look through a thousand recipes of hers. I typed in the title, but it tells me,there is not match for it.========================================= Sorry, I am on Safari again. Renate

Renate when you do the search, you have to wait a bit until it all loads but even though it says there are no matches if you look at the different catagories (recipes, community, videos, cooking school, plus) each one has a number in brackets. (these show up in a blue green color under the red on my screen  Usually community and then just click on there and you should get some posts up.  Hope that helps you....

Here are 2 lists of abbreviations.  This helped me a lot when I was really new.

I just realized that SOB is not on these lists.  It means "Skip on By" meaning the message is intended for a certain person such as "Picasso all others SOB" or with the new board I sometimes see "Testing SOB" when someone is trying something out and does not need a reply.

Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

Diva, you get the "smart & experimental" award - with this new BB I just say "Who gives a flying Ship" and don't bother to learn the tricks.  Think my brain oozed outta my ear after too many years of college, lol.  Good for you for losing some weight; I don't have a scale, but have been treadmilling faithfully.no diff. yet.  Notice the diff. when my pants start falling off me.

Erna, Dobie is practicing being a "reverse endtable." he's laying on his back, all long legs in the air, scratching his back on the carpet and making "yum-yum" noises.  Other than barking, dogs make wierd noises, maybe I'll work to become a "dog interpreter," then get on TV, write books, lol.

Renate, Picasso, Jet, we're cold here too, about -22 with wind chill.  When one lives close to a Great Lake, the "Lake Effect" can drastically change your weather.

Shannon, please be welcome, there are so many abbreviations on the BB, takes me awhile, too, to get used to them.

Hello to Texas, Twinkle, Melanie.  Brownies coming out of the oven.  The men are cooking, DH making steaks with homemade creamed spinich.  lydia

Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

I found this in one of my cookbooks.  If you have ever picked up one of these mixes at the store you know they are LOADED with salt.  This is low in salt and very easy sounding, it is not TNT.

    EASY SPANISH RICE

From Make it Fresh a WW magazine

    Cooking Spray

½ cup chopped green bell pepper

    ½ cup chopped onion

    2 (8 oz) cans no-salt-added tomato sauce

1 (14 ½ oz) can no-salt-added stewed tomatoes, undrained and chopped

    1 cup uncooked long-grain rice

    ¼ cup water

    1 tsp chili powder

    ½ tsp dried oregano

    ¼ tsp salt

    ¼ tsp ground red pepper

    ¼ tsp ground cumin

Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray, and place over medium-high heat until hot.

Add bell pepper and onion; sauté 5 minutes or until tender.

Add tomato sauce and remaining ingredients; bring to a boil.

Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 25 minutes or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.

Yield: 8 servings (serving size ½ cup)

    WW points = 2

    Exchanges = 1 ½ starch

Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

The list of abbreviations really helped me when I first joined the BB too....especially when i would go to KC to read post! LOL!

Hope everyone is doing well! Dh is not feeling well today, at his work he has to go outside sometimes to get parts, and with the cold spell that we have had, he got a really bad cold....and he gets sooooo grumpy when he's sick!! LOL!! MEN!!! Confused

I went ahead and weighed today instead of tomorrow (probably will weigh tomorrow too) and I lost about 2 oz. !!! LOL! It is so hard to lose when its T.O.M.!!!

I just looked out side and it looks like it maybe either snowing or sleeting just a little bit, just once in a while you can see something white....

I am really enjoying this hi-speed internet! We still have to hook up our e-mail....for some reason its messed up????

Well I had better get busy!

    Later Jet

Picasso, you get an award. I think I will print this out and have it besides the computer. Once in a while ,there is an abbreviation, I don't know what it is.========================================================= Waving to all of you! I have to visit my kitchen, since I have to cook the pork chops some more, since there are still not soft. I am not a good pork cook. I rather bake a complicated cake.Oh, Lydia, does this sound great, that you don't have to cook. I cook for some time and suddenly I need a brake. Maybe today should be the date,to eat something more exciting. Renate

Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

Renate, do you like pork cooked with sauerkraut? I put mine in the CP with a rinsed can of *** and a can of broth. The pork melts in your mouth.

Jet sorry to hear DH is sick. I'm lucky -- mine just sleeps and sleeps when he doesn't feel good. Not your ordinary guy, is he? He really never complains. I do enough of that when I'm sick for both of us.Embarrassed

Picasso, thanks for the rice recipe. Both DH and I enjoy Spanish rice and the packaged stuff if just filled with sodium. Way to much salt in the processed stuff.

Boy Lydia, your DH sure knows how to whip up a yummy supper. Lucky you. Don't know how you could lose an ounce living with a cook like that. Creamed spinach? Fat free, I'm sure. LOL. Thanks for the support and good wishes Sister Witchie Pooh.

    Welcome Shannon!

Berny, thanks for the good wishes regarding the tests. I will be out when then do them I just hope nothing goes wrong during the procedures and that the results bring some good news. I sure could use it.

Re: Decrease the Salt & Keep the Taste in Cooking

    Creamy Chicken & Vegetables (Crockpot)

4 lb. chicken, cut into serving pieces

2 lbs. small red potatoes, cut in half

    16 oz. pkg. baby carrots

    1 onion, chopped

    2 cloves garlic, minced

14 oz. can low sodium chicken broth

    1 cup light sour cream

    3 Tbsp. flour

    1/8 tsp. white pepper

    1/2 tsp. dried thyme leaves

    PREPARATION:

In 3-4 quart slow cooker, place potatoes, carrots and onion. Top with chicken. Pour chicken broth over all. Cover crockpot and cook on low for 8-9 hours until chicken is thoroughly cooked and vegetables are tender.

In small bowl, stir together light sour cream, flour, pepper, and thyme until well blended. Stir into mixture in crockpot and turn heat to high. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. 6 servings

NOTE: This recipe originally cooked for 10-12 hours on low. However, with the newer crockpots which cook hotter, you should start checking the chicken and vegetables for doneness at the 8 hour point.
