Rec & Rev: Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing

Several years ago Texasrose & PRCA posted this recipe and I finally tried it this weekend. We loved it! It reminded me of a Catalina French dressing and I know I'll make it again soon. I wasn't sure what kind of vinegar to but I had some red wine vinegar that worked great. LibraryLinda

Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing (posted by PRCA)

3/4 cup to 1 cup sugar
3/4 cup to 1 cup oil
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted
    1/2 cup vinegar
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon dry powdered mustard
    1 teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon celery seed
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Blend first 3 ingredients together. Add the remaining ingredients and blend in mixer. Chill until needed.

    Makes 1 quart.

Notes: The Dorothy Lynch Salad dressing originated in St Paul, Nebraska at the Legion club by a lady named Dorothy Lynch who invented the salad dressing in the 1940's. This salad dressing is GOOD! GOOD! GOOD!

I really like this recipe too. My Grandmother passed it along to me. I add some cayenne and some chopped onions to spice it up a bit.

Oh, I like both of those ideas! Thank you moly, for sharing your additions.

How could it be that I missed this old 'tried and true' recipe until now?!!!

I have a bottle of the real thing in my pantry and absolutely love it. My DH and I took a vacation in the upper midwest this past summer and bought 3 bottles of it home with us. I'll have to make my own when it's gone as we don't have it in the South. Thanks for the post.

I love this recipe as well.... my MIL gave it to me but I thought it was more of an OTT's type?? Or is OTTs and Dorthy Lynch the same thing? Ive never bought any Dorthy Lynch but have always wanted to try it.

    Karla,

I've never heard of OTT's so I looked it up online. Their dressings look good, plus they have a lot of recipes using their dressings in recipes. As far as Dorothy Lynch and OTT's I have no idea if they are the same thing. But if anyone is interested, here is Ott's website of recipe links.

Library Linda, thanks for the tip about using the red wine vinegar. I just bought some for another recipe (which one I cannot remember right now -- you know how that goes).

I will try to return the favor by telling you that I wouldn't suggest using a generic tomato soup in this recipe. I tried it once. Once. It really turned out too soupy in texture and just didn't have that special taste. It might have been just the brand but ever since I have used good old reliable Campbell's. My family and friends just love this tangy red kind of French dressing.

Thanks for the nice review. I appreciate it plus it reminded me it's time to make this again. Big Smile

I haven't been able to get Dorothy Lynch ever since we moved to GA.  Someone here posted this for me and I have been making it ever since.  I always use the lesser amount of sugar and oil and have even made it with Splenda.  Not quite as good with Splenda - but still works!

    GmawMary,

Thanks for mentioning that you've used Splenda with good results. I have a diabetic friend and I think she would like this recipe. LibraryLinda
