HL Topic of the week 3/3 to 3/9 Can you shine your lips and slim your hips?

Can a shiny lip gloss slim your hips?

    By Bridget Murray Law

Rub on a lip gloss and lose weight. Sip a berry drink and look younger. Down some iced tea and burn calories. If only it were that simple.      “Always on the lips … never on the hips,” promise ads for the new "Fuze Slenderize Guilt free" lip gloss. Marketed by Too Faced Cosmetics, the flavored lip gloss claims it can suppress your appetite with the same mix of minerals and ingredients found in Coca-Cola's Fuze energy fruit drinks.

As Americans continue to struggle with weight loss, marketers are getting more outlandish with their quick-fix diet claims. At least with Fuze, a blend of the minerals chromium and L-carnitine, along a hydroxycitric acide extract called Super Citrimax, the calorie conscious had to drink a full bottle of the beverage to get the promised hunger-easing metabolism boost. Now all that's required is to slather it on your mouth, according to the company.

The lip gloss works because "the skin on the lips is very thin...you will ingest some of it," says Too Faced founder Jerrod Blandino. It's playing with nutritional science in a "girly kind of way," he says.    The fruit-flavored lip gloss may taste yummy, but don't expect to get skinny hips from shiny lips, experts say.

"There’s no magic bullet in any of the ingredients, says Joy Bauer, TODAY's nutrition expert and author of "Food Cures" (Rodale, 2007). "If dieting were as easy as putting on lip gloss or downing a drink, we would not be dealing with such an obesity problem, and everybody would be a size 2."

    Oreos could blow the benefit
Bauer notes that there's no hard evidence linking these products to weight loss, although Coke and Nestlé, which market the diet green-tea drink Enviga, tout their small 2007 study. In a three-day study with 31 healthy men and women, the companies found that Enviga drinkers burned 106 more calories than participants who drank a plain beverage.

But the study only included slim people, and three cans daily for three days is not enough to claim long-term calorie-burning, critics charge.    Jeffrey Blumberg, director of Tufts University’s Antioxidants Research Laboratory says you’d have to drink about nine cans of Enviga, for example, at around $1.50 a pop, to burn up 100 calories.    “Eating just a couple Oreo cookies would completely override that benefit,” says Blumberg. “There’s some evidence of calorie-burning from green tea, but the effects are very modest.”

The way these products might help you lose weight is if you're drinking them instead of calorie-laden fruit juice and sodas, say Bauer. (Fuze drinks have about 10 calories per serving; Enviga, 5 calories per serving.) Putting on a flavored lip gloss could be a distraction from eating, similar to chewing sugar-free gum, she says.

    Sipping for smoother skin
Even if you can't lip balm your way to thin, what about sipping your way to smoother skin? Another new entry blurring the lines between beauty, beverages and "girly science" is a line of fruit beverages from cosmetics company Borba Skin Balance. Its drinks promise to do everything from protecting dry skin to fixing wrinkles – for about $3 a bottle.

Borba, a Woodland Hills, Calif. skin care company partnered with beer marketers Anheuser-Busch to distribute what the company promotes as drinkable skin care products. Borba won’t reveal specifics about the active ingredients, which appear to be the antioxidant Vitamins C and E. But CEO Scott-Vincent Borba insists the nutrients’ benefits are proven.

"All our products are tested in independent research labs — that’s how we back up our claims," says Borba. "But we don’t tell consumers they’ll see X result in X number of days because everyone’s system is unique."

Because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers these products supplements, not drugs, it allows them more latitude with promotional claims. Where drugs need approval from the FDA before being sold, supplements do not. As long as supplements are safe to use and their labels not blatantly untrue, the FDA doesn’t interfere.     In other countries, the rules are laxer still. In Japan, for example, Coca-Cola sells the diet drink Love Body, which contains the supposedly breast-enlarging ingredient fenugreek.

Blumberg sees a lack of science supporting the beverages that tout their anti-aging properties. The antioxidants they cite as active ingredients may help prevent skin damage, he says, but they don’t reverse it.    More than that, the drinks don’t contain enough antioxidants to pack a beneficial punch. If they did, they’d taste nasty, Blumberg explains.     “These are expensive products that contain less vitamins than a daily multivitamin you’d get for a nickel,” says Blumberg. “For the best skin benefit, take that multivitamin and eat some fruit.”

Re: HL Topic of the week 3/3 to 3/9 Can you shine your lips and slim your hips?

Good morning everyone!  Thank you all again for the cards, ecards and anniversary wishes   :)   Tim wound up not feeling well yesterday, so for his bday we picked up Jake and went to a family owned Greek pizza place where he could get some big bowls of Lemon Chicken Rice soup.    He slept most of the afternoon and Jake & I watched movies.    He is off tonight, but Jake is back to school.    Will be headed to the gym after I drop him off, then to do a few quick errands.   Supposed to be a gorgeous day, so after I pick Jake up we'll go out for a ride and get some fresh air.

I'm not familiar with any of the products in today's article, but I know I have seen an influx of health oriented waters lately.   Vitamin water.  Protein water.    Some with almost as many calories as juice or soda.

I was real torn about which article to post today, I have another really good one from Eating Well, but it's quite long, and deals with binge eating.   I know I've posted a lot of stuff on emotional/binge eating because it's something that I struggle with.     For anyone who wants to check it out, follow this link:

    http://www.eatingwell.com/news_views/special_report/food_relationships.html

Muril, your meals from the weekend sound yummy!  And yes, I would keel over and die with pink toenails    LOL    Bummer on the J hook!   I have a whole box of knitting/crocheting supplies, can't locate it, must be up in the crawl space.   I've either been borrowing from mom or buying stuff as I need it, but I just know I'm going to find that case and have duplicates!

Dusta, I think all the food policing stuff is ridiculous.    Just because I struggle with my weight doesn't mean EVERYONE does.   This is America, if people want to buy girl scout cookies or eat at a restaurant they should be able to.    It's like all the places banning transfats.   I will bet in 10yrs it will all swing back around or what they've replaced it with is even worse for you.    Everyone should have the freedom to decide what they eat and drink, for goodness sake!    LOL   Sorry to get all worked up this morning   :)

Waving and sending hugs to Betsy and everyone who checks in this morning!

    Good Morning!

Jolene, lol on the  "pink" toenails. Wink   My toenails look better than my fingernails because I have my hands in water so much.  I keep them short and manicured but if I have any polish on them, it is clear or maybe a soft frost that lasts just a day until they are chipped- but my toenails last a couple of weeks and they look better....put two coats and sometimes a top coat- they are currently a pale frosty beige peach. :)  Fingernails are a la naturele! :)

BTW, Jolene, glad you and Jake had some fun and sorry Tim wasn't feeling well. Bummer. Sad

I love the article- NO can't lose wt. with a lip gloss or green tea ...although I do think the green tea is healthy with some benefits and may boost metabolism- but it isn't a miracle diet aid- not in my book anyway. I did see a post in KC once about a woman saying she drank loads of green tea and that's how she keep her wt.off.

Hi Ho, it's off to Miss Nancy's I go!  Will check back later this evening if I have the energy! LOL

    Happy Day All!

    Hugs,

    ~Muril~

     Good Morning!

I've never heard of the lip gloss thing, interesting. I can see it from one angle - when I put on lip gloss or lipstick, the last thing I want to do is mess it up so it keeps me from eating or drinking. Does that count?!??  LOL!!!

Jolene - hope you had a good anniversary. Did you enjoy your night? Sorry to hear Tim isn't feeling well, I just went through that with dh last week.  I can't get over how many people are getting sick this year.

Good Morning to all who stop by Coffee

any word from Jen? Or charlene or michele? They've all been MIA. I know michele & her dh weren't feeling well.

I feel sluggish this morning - can't seem to get myself going.  Still not sleeping well - Samantha is all over the place and the leg cramps are happening 1-2x a night. Muril - the flexing helps!! I thought it would hurt worse to move my legs while they are cramping but it actually helps.

Going to be near 70 this afternoon so I think spring is coming to the south!  Hope everyone has a great day!!

Re: HL Topic of the week 3/3 to 3/9 Can you shine your lips and slim your hips?

    Good morning.

I told Jolene I would try to start posting again,  So we'll see if the bb lets me.

Don't get the computer as much this time of year,  the guys are in the house more, and always in the office.   Had a big storm last night,  heavy rain,  wind, thunder and lightening.  Hope that is the end of it for awhile.  We really need some dry weather to get the ground dried up.  We need to start planting corn  within about 3 weeks.  And once more Mother Nature has got us SO far behind that I'm not sure we'll ever see the end.

Jolene,  It says you posted this around 2 a.m.  You are suppose to be sleeping at that time.

I read some of last weeks post and made notes to myself.  I know several of you have talked about opening windows,  BUT that is something I don't know how to do.  Jolene hasn't hit me over the head with the dummy book for awhile.

Dawn,  I remember those leg cramps,  they will make you yell they are so bad.  Are you naming the Baby Samantha.  Our new little granddaughter is due April 12.  So far we are calling her Gertie.  (not the actual name she will have).

Muril,  I get the Ken's Country French dressing also for hubby.  I checked it with some of the lo cal stuff and they had just as many carbs.

Jeanne,  Jennifer would win the grand prize for eye rolling.

Debi,  We've been through Alzeheimers with hubby's Grandma.  She got to where she didn't even know him before they put her in the nursing home,  but she actually escaped from the nursing home and managed to hitch a ride back to her old home.  But you asked about being mean,  my Step-mothers mom had it and she was a very polite nice person before, but they said in the nursing home that she would get mad and start cussing you out.  And I'm sure if she had known what she was doing she would have been mortified.

Dusta,  My daughter went on a low carb diet a while back,  she wants to lose about 10 lbs. or so,  she about starved herself and didn't lose a pound.

Jen,  I think my Jennifer would be drooling over your shoes.  But I'm like the others,  I would break my neck in them.

Well,  I have to go and get the house up and going.   Will try and check back in later.

Now to see if this will post or just disappear.

    Debbie

Morning Muril~!! Enjoy your day with Miss Nancy :-)

my toes look better too LOL!!! it's hard to keep my fingernails polished & not chipped, always washing my hands or something. But my toes stay pretty for a while :-)  In the summer's I have to be a bit more conservative with what color I paint my toes ~~ open toed shoes + work = have to look nice. But in the winter I can (and do) paint them all kinds of funky colors. Right now I"ve got electric purple LOL!!! Just something fun and makes me smile when I think about it. And it is for me  Big Smile

     Morning Debbie!!

(everyone keeps sneaking in on me LOL!!!)

Yep - we're naming the baby Samantha Rayne (pronounced Rain). We tried out a couple of names & that one stuck :-)

Keep losing my internet connection this morning! My stomach is acting all blechy, I hope I can hang on long enough to get Jake to school. Tim is home tonight, so I can go to the gym later this afternoon or even after Jake goes to bed.

Muril, here’s my secret: I HATE feet! I am not into foot rubs, pedis, sandals, etc. The only ones I could tolerate were Jake’s little baby feet J As they get bigger though, the less interaction I have with them. LOL Have a fun day at Miss Nancy’s!

Dawn, sorry to hear baby girl isn’t letting you get much rest. {{Dawn}} For the leg cramps, try adding a banana or other high potassium food, drink LOTS of water, and try putting a bar of soap under your sheet down by the foot of the bed. I think that was a diet trick of the 50’s, not wanting to mar their lipstick! J

I got an email from Michelle on Friday, haven’t heard from Charlene or Jen. Sending out good thoughts for all.

Debbie, so good to have you back with us!!! Your time zone is set wrong J My post was at 5:15 EST. I can’t remember how to reset that on the BB, will look it up after and tell you. For a new window to open, RIGHT click on the reply button then choose OPEN IN NEW WINDOW. J Sending dry weather thoughts!

    Hope this goes through!

Recipe & review: Classic Beef Pot Roast~Cooking Light

    posted 3/2/2008 by Jmartinelli13

I made this for dinner friday night but between the snow and celebrating our anniversary I forgot to post a review    :)      The title of this says it all- CLASSIC.    They should have also called it simple and very yummy   :)      I've never used wine with a roast before, I'm not a good wine buyer at all   LOL    I had a bottle of 1990 that my parents had kicking around and passed on to me   :)   I added just about a cup more beef broth, because I started it too early and the pot would have run dry before Tim got home from work.     :)

    Enjoy

      1           teaspoon  kosher salt
1/4      teaspoon  freshly ground black pepper
2               cups  coarsely chopped onion (I used dried minced)
      1                cup  dry red wine
4                     thyme sprigs (I used dried)
      3                     garlic cloves -- chopped
      1                can  fat-free -- (14-ounce) less-sodium beef broth (I added about 1 additional cup)
1                     bay leaf (mine were small, I used 2)
4              large  carrots -- peeled and cut diagonally into 1-inch pieces
2             pounds  Yukon gold potatoes -- peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces
                            Fresh thyme leaves (optional)

    Preheat oven to 350º.

Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sprinkle chuck roast with salt and pepper. Add roast to pan; cook 5 minutes, turning to brown on all sides. Remove roast from pan. Add onion to pan; sauté 8 minutes or until tender.

Return browned roast to pan. Add the red wine, thyme sprigs, chopped garlic, beef broth, and bay leaf to pan; bring to a simmer. Cover pan and bake at 350° for 1 1/2 hours or until the roast is almost tender.

Add carrots and potatoes to pan. Cover and bake an additional 1 hour or until vegetables are tender. Remove thyme sprigs and bay leaf from pan; discard. Shred meat with 2 forks. Serve roast with vegetable mixture and cooking liquid. Garnish with thyme leaves, if desired.

Yield: 10 servings (serving size: 3 ounces roast, about 3/4 cup vegetables, and about 3 tablespoons cooking liquid)

Glad Jen's ok. I can' t believe her wedding is almost here. Seems like just yesterday she sent us the pics of her NY trip  *sniffle*

I think I have the potassium covered - I eat either a banana or yogurt every day, if not both every day. But I may increase that just to make sure. Some people say it doesn't matter, you can get them no matter what. Others say it's the typical charlie horse & get potassium. It can't hurt to eat a banana and/or yogurt so I do/will. Man, this pregancny thing sure isn't for wimps ~ and I think I"m boarderline  LOL!!!!

    Hello everyone!

I have missed being on the BB soooo much this weekend!! This gets very addicting!! LOL!

We went shopping Saturday and had a good time, and then yesterday are computer was acting up, so dh was tearing through the house looking for the backup disc, and he just declared that I had to have thrown them away!!! There was no way that he would have moved them!!! Well we ended up finding them........right where he had put them!!!!! Angry And of course men are never wrong!!!! "I must have moved them there"!!!

Needless to say.....I didn't talk to him a whole lot yesterday!!! LOL!

Well I don't know about using lip gloss to lose weight......I don't think it would work well for me, because I can't wear lip gloss!!! It makes my mouth break out....

We are suppossed to be getting storms here today.Lightning  It was a red sky this morning, so it will probably be bad!!

Well I hope everyone has a good day, and I will check in later!

Hi Jet!  sorry dh was being a heel yesterday :-\  I think it's a guy thing, mine does that too. I'm an organizer & when I take something, I put it back because next time I need/want it, I want to be able to put my hands on it. DH doesn't put stuff back, and he'll be the first to tell you he doesn't put stuff back. But what happens when something goes missing?!?? Yep, he blames me. Every time. Yet when I point that out he gets mad at me. Ugh. We just can't win LOL!!!

I feel better today though, and its kinda funny now....

You know the old saying "If it sounds to go to be true?"  "They" will try to sell us anything to make us think it is easy to lose weight.. Not.

Dawn sorry about the legs, know it hurts. I know drs put women on vitamins now theat are suppose to help that, they didn't back in my day. A baked potato is one of the highest potassium foods and I think winter squash is also high.

Jen glad you are okay. Debbie have missed you. Took your idea on the laddler Christmas tree and expanded it. I don't have a digital camera and if I ever take enough pictures to have these developed I have going to try to figure a way to put it here. Maybe dh can.

Have a great day. I am going to have to drive over to TX and have my car inspected, it will be out by the time we get back from MS.
