I made Garbage for dinner tonight

for the first time - it was a hit.  Thank you John.

    M_Wolverine's Garbage

    10-12 med potatoes, thin sliced
    1 lb lean ground beef
    1 med. onion chopped
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1 tsp chili powder
    black pepper
    2 (15.5 oz.) cans chili beans w/sauce
2 (10.5 oz.) cans cream of mushroom soup
    ½ cup milk
    2 Tbs oleo or butter

    Preheat oven to 350°.
Grease or spray a 9x13 baking pan.
Slice potatoes and place them in a bowl of cold water.
In a skillet brown ground beef half way, drain.
Add onion, garlic powder and chili powder, finish browning meat.
Stir in beans, soup and milk. Continue heating and stirring until
    hot all the way through.
Place a layer of potatoes in baking pan, season lightly with pepper,
then cover with a layer of meat and bean mixture.
Alternate layers until the pan is full, ending with a layer of potatoes.
Dot with oleo or butter. Cover with foil, place on a cookie sheet in oven
And bake for two hours or until potatoes are tender all through the dish.
    Serves 6-8.

    Hi Picasso!

So glad that you liked it. That really falls into the "comfort food" category in our family and I used to eat until I hurt. Because of my blood sugar levels, i have to severely limit the amount of potatoes I eat, so if and when I do make this again, I only get about a cup of it. :-(

I guess some's better than none though eh?

Thank you for letting me know that you tried it and the nice review.

I have this recipe saved, and have always wanted to try it. I was thinking about mxiing everything together, and putting it in a crockpot, fixing a salad, rolls, and letting the ER gang give their recipe review. I also have to watch the glucose levels, but I enjoy fixing for other people.

Oh good, I was looking for something new to make for supper.  The kids had another snow day again today, but I could have DS start peeling potatoes and browning the ground meat before I get home from work today.

As long as the cholesterol is low, I'm good--my doctor recently put me on Vytorin.  Can you imagine, he told me that I had to cut out the butter, cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, etc.  I told him, "look, everything I make has sour cream or cream cheese--I'm Hungarian for God sake."  That's when he decided that Vytorin was the way to go as I was having trouble "modifying" my diet.

    Hi Janet,

This can easily be made quite a bit healthier, by using a good lean ground beef like ground sirloin, or brown whatever meat you have, put it in a strainer and rinse it with hot water. i've done that many times and it still has good flavor. You can also use low fat/low sodium cream of mushroom soup and mix it with any lower fat milk that you have.

I forgot to mention that I did make this with skim milk.  It was all I had in the house.  I've never had it before so I can't compare, but we liked it just fine with skim.

So you can replace some of the cream of mushroom with milk?

    This recipe looks really good.

BTW- John I love your quote.

I suppose that you could replace some of the soup with milk if you want. my Mom used to make her scalloped potatoes just using milk. The milk we were talking about though is the 1/2 cup that the recipe already calls for.

John, have you tried this in the crockpot?  I love dishes I can put together before leaving for work in the morning.  Just curious.  Janette

I don't think I can make this recipe. Legally, in the state of Ohio and as an official Buckey fan, we are not permitted to cook anything that contains the word "Wolverine" in it. he he he Cool Just kidding, thought I would throw that in. Have a great day!

Oh I haven't made this for awhile but now that I am reminded of it again I think I see some garbage on our menu soon.  Besides the awesome flavor (and John we also eat it until we hurt), I love that it is ingredients I always have on hand.   Nindsy

No, sorry Janette, I've never tried tis in a crockpot. It DOES sound like a good idea and I've heard that people DO make scalloped potatoes in the crockpot, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. It would end up juicier, is the only difference that I can think of.

Nindsy, if you make it soon, have some for me will you please? If and when I ever get my blood sugar under control, I MIGHT be able to have a small serving, but I don't foresee that anytime in the near future. So glad that you like this too.
