HL topic of the week 3/10 to 3/16 How Sugar ages your skin!

    Face Facts About Sugar

If the promise of a slimmer waistline hasn't curbed your sweet tooth, maybe the desire for smooth skin will. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but experts now believe that a lifetime of overeating sugar can make skin dull and wrinkled.

At blame is a natural process that's known as glycation, in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products (or, appropriately, AGEs for short). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you develop. "As AGEs accumulate, they damage adjacent proteins in a domino-like fashion," explains Fredric Brandt, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in Miami and New York City and author of 10 Minutes 10 Years. Most vulnerable to damage: collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that keep skin firm and elastic. In fact, collagen is the most prevalent protein in the body. Once damaged, springy and resilient collagen and elastin become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkles and sagging. These aging effects start at about age 35 and increase rapidly after that, according to a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Besides damaging collagen, a high-sugar diet also affects what type of collagen you have--another factor in how resistant skin is to wrinkling, says Brandt. The most abundant collagens in the skin are types I, II, and III, with type III being the most stable and longest lasting. Glycation transforms type III collagen into type I, which is more fragile. "When that happens, the skin looks and feels less supple," says Brandt. The final blow: AGEs deactivate your body's natural antioxidant enzymes, leaving you more vulnerable to sun damage--still the main cause of skin aging.

One group that knows all too well sugar's ravaging effects: people with diabetes, who--because they can suffer from years of undetected high blood sugar--often show early signs of skin aging. "Depending on how well their disease is controlled, diabetics can have up to 50 times the number of AGEs in their skin as those who don't have diabetes," says Karyn Grossman, MD, a dermatologist in New York City and Santa Monica, CA, and chief of the division of dermatology at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica.

The good news about sugar-damaged skin: It's never too late to turn back the clock. One way is to build new collagen with products that contain retinoids--look for retinol in OTC serums and lotions or prescription creams such as Renova, Avage, and Differin. To keep this new collagen supple, prevent AGEs from forming by taking steps to minimize the damage sugar causes to your skin. Here, five steps to eat right and keep your skin looking its youngest:

    1. Cut back on the sweet stuff in your diet.
It's not easy to eliminate sugar completely. Even whole grains, fruits, and vegetables turn to glucose--the type of sugar that fuels glycation--when digested. But limiting added sugar can help. Some guidelines: Keep added sugar to no more than 10% of total calories. If you're a 45-year-old woman of average height (5-foot-4), that's 160 calories (or 10 teaspoons) from added sugar--about the number in one 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola or six Hershey's Kisses. By comparison, the average American consumes 31 teaspoons per day of added sugar, or the equivalent of 465 calories. (To find out how many calories total you should eat every day, log on to prevention.com/caloriecalculator.) Watch for hidden sugar in food. Many prepared foods contain hefty amounts of sugar--but it's hidden under aliases--including barley malt, corn syrup, dextrose, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, maple syrup, molasses, and turbinado--on ingredient panels. The key is determining how many teaspoons of sugar each serving contains. Doing this is easy: Check the nutrition label for sugars, which are listed in grams under total carbohydrates, and then divide that number by 4 (each teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4 g) to convert it to teaspoons. For example, if sugars are listed as 12 g, you're getting 3 teaspoons of sugar per serving. Avoid high fructose corn syrup. This type of sweetener, which is made by changing the sugar in cornstarch to fructose (another form of sugar), is believed to produce more AGEs than other types. Because HFCS extends the shelf life of foods and is sweeter and cheaper than other sugars, it's a popular ingredient in soda, fruit-flavored drinks, and packaged foods such as breads, crackers, and other snacks. You can spot it in ingredient lists on nutrition labels.

    2. Supplement your diet with at least 1 mg of vitamins B1 and B6 a day.
These vitamins proved to be potent AGE inhibitors in a number of published studies, says David J. Goldberg, MD, a New York Citybased dermatologist and a clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. B1 and B6 are plentiful in food, but taking a multivitamin--most of which deliver at least 1 mg of both Bs--ensures you're getting the daily value of 1.1 mg for B1 and 1.3 mg for B6 (1.5 mg after age 50).

    3. Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen every day.
Significantly more AGEs occur in sun-exposed skin than in protected skin, according to the British Journal of Dermatology study.

    4. Employ an inside-outside approach to antioxidants.
These free-radical fighters help keep sugar from attaching to proteins, so replenishing their supply--both by eating more antioxidant-rich fruits, nuts, and vegetables, such as cranberries, walnuts, and red bell peppers, and by applying topical antioxidants such as green tea and vitamins C and E--is a real skin saver. "It seems to be the best way to ensure that they reach the dermal layer of skin, where collagen and elastin are located," says Goldberg.

    5. Use new ingredients that protect skin from sugar.
A growing number of products contain compounds like aminoguanidine and alistin, which have been shown to block the formation of AGEs (see at left). "Aminoguanidine attaches to molecules that start the glycation process and prevents them from binding to collagen and elastin," explains Grossman. "Alistin acts as a decoy, so it gets damaged instead of the proteins in your skin." In a study on Prescriptives Anti-AGE Advanced Protection Lotion SPF 25, which contains both ingredients, skin treated with the product had 21% fewer AGEs after 8 weeks than untreated skin. Sweet!

    Good Morning!

Jolene, hope you are back to your perky healthy self this morning! :)  Great article. I agree - sugar isn't that good for us- skin and otherwise- they medical world already knows that it feeds cancer cells- not a good thing.....I cannot understand why the Dr. does not recommend that one stays away from a lot of sugar when they are diagnosed but usually they tell them to eat a normal diet- could not be a good thing considering what the patient considers normal. In remembering Glen - while he was sick- his wife kept Little Debbie's and doughnuts for his snacking at the end and I just cringed thinking about all that sugar.       :( She didn't understand though and I didn't want to sound like a know it all...so... oh well.

Off to Miss Nancy's after I eat B'fast and dry my hair!

Hugs to All! Have a lovely Monday!

Just a quick stop in to let you guys know that Keith Urban and I did not run off together... [:'(] the concert was great! We had a blast and we had excellent seats! It was a great early birthday present.

We also got our Jack Johnson tickets on Saturday. Which I'm just way to excited for! It's in August at the Red Rocks in CO. If you haven't heard of it, google it. I can not wait!!

Waving to everyone!! Hugs to all! I miss you guys!!

Re: HL topic of the week 3/10 to 3/16 How Sugar ages your skin!

*yawn*  is it monday already?!?!?  I'm dragging today - couldn't seem to get out of the house on time. This time change messes me up. Does in the fall too :-\

Great article Jolene. I didn't know sugar could do that to skin. I've cut a lot of excess sugar out of my diet in the last few years. I still have it, but I try to keep track of how much.

Jolene - how is your grandma? Are you feeling any better? Read anything good lately? I am finishing a book called "If I am dead or missing". Can't think of who it's by, but it's a memoir of this woman who has two sisters, they grew up w/ an abusive father, all three girls followed the cycle & married abusive men. One sister went missing & they found her dead. The author talks about how her own marriage is, how she dealt w/ her sister's death, how she got the strength to get out. Surprisingly, it's written with a good bit of humor and overall it's been a really good book. Heavier content, but a good book.

We had a good weekend - didn't warm up as much as they said it would but it was still nice out. We got a lot done on our to-do list(s) so that felt good. Went for a run yesterday - however it's time to hang up the running shoes :-(  The last few times I"ve gone, my hip & knee joints have ached after. Yesterday they hurt while I was running. So I walked the rest of the 4 miles at a brisk pace. Walking is fine, but the running it getting to be too much. I got into my 6th month, so I can't complain. I'm just really going to miss it. Now I"ll go the same days I normally run, and go the same distances, but do it at a good work-out walking pace. We'll see how that goes.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Good morning. . It is raining here and I know we won't be leaving today. There is always the last things to put in the motorhome that you can't put in early. Stuff that goes in fridge, mayo, butter and the coffee, etc.

There was someone on Fox yesterday talking about weight and said sugar was worse than fat at making us fat. Didn't talk about our skin though. I thought the worse thing for our skin was over exposure to the sun. I know I am addicted to sugar, if I eat something really sweet and fat I then crave it. And cookies are my favorite!

Who is Margie? I know she is on the board a lot but can't remember who she is. On yesterdays post, last night, Wendy said; she and her husband had been carjacked.  (I keep thinking candykisses or cubbybear)

Re: HL topic of the week 3/10 to 3/16 How Sugar ages your skin!

Hey, healthy ladies.  Sorry I've been MIA for the past week.  I haven't had much spare time to check forums.  I don't think I've posted on my running forum since March 1st, and this forum is soooo slow to load, even with DSL.  Don't get me wrong, I like the new forum... but when you're pressed for time, it's very slow.  I personally prefer no bells & whistles if it means it will come up quickly.

I wish I had good news to report on my SIL... but about the only good news is that at least she's not getting any worse.  She's been at UVA Medical Center for over a week now.  Initially, they had hoped to have her out of cardiac ICU within a day or two, but no... she's still there.  She's just not getting better like they hoped.  It's been so difficult for the whole family.  It's hard to go about my daily life without my thoughts being consumed by it.

My little bit of good news is that I weighed in at a new all-time low on Saturday morning (since trying to eat healthy).  Then, I slipped into boredom and complacency eating for the rest of the day.  I bet I ate 5,000 calories.  Tongue Tied  What the heck is wrong with me?  Why do I do that?  Yesterday (Sunday) wasn't great either; it was better than Saturday, but still not great and then I ended the day with two Rum & Pepsi's.

OK, back onto the healthy wagon I climb.  Hopefully I didn't stretch out my stomach too much that I feel super hungry all day.  That was the hardest thing about climbing on the wagon initially.  I felt hungry a lot.  I was used to consuming way more food than I need.  Now I'm used to eating less.  hopefully my binge on Saturday didn't ruin that for me!

Oh, and I can't lift today b/c I did something yesterday to my wrist (I can't imagine what, though!) and my tendon is hurting.  Grrrr.  At some point, I will go out and buy one of those wrist braces from the drugstore to help immobilize it for some of the day.  Even little things like reaching for something in the cabinet irritate it.  I have to keep my wrist/arm aligned until the inflammation goes down a bit, I guess.

Last Monday,  I curled 20-pound dumbbells in each arm for the first time in YEARS.  I did 4 reps in each arm.  That was my second set.  I had already done 16 in each arm using the 15-lb. dumbbells.  The most I've ever been able to curl is a 50-lb. barbell.  I don't like to use barbells though, b/c I feel like my strong arm compensates for my weak one.  So when I did that 50-pounder, I think my right arm was lifting more than its fair share.  So I prefer to use dumbbells and force the left arm to work as much as the right one.

I also think the weekly swimming session is helping my upper body strength as well.  I swim 1000 yds. when my daughter has her 1/2 hour lesson.  I try to do mostly freestyle, but I throw some breastroke in there as well.

I think that's all that's going on here.  Hope everyone has been doing ok since I last checked in.  :)

Jeanne ~ ((((hugs)))) we know you've had  a lot going on. I'm so sorry your SIL isn't getting better faster. I can't imagine what you're going through. My thoughts & prayers have been with her, all of you, and will continue to be.   LOL @ the 2 rum & pepsi. Meh. Sometimes it's what takes the edge off :-) Have to tell you, that is one thing I miss.

Good morning everyone.   Sorry about the post and run earlier, we are all out of whack here today with the time change.   Yesterday seemed to go by real quick, and Jake resisted bedtime, which didn't help.     Not sure if I got overconfident or what, but I'm hoarse and hacking like a 3 pack a day smoker.    Just wore myself out bringing him to school and loadind the dw.    Back to the mucinex and if I don't feel better by Wednesday I guess I'll have to go to the doctor.   Blech.

Sending hugs and good thoughts for Margie and DH.   What a scary thing.

Waving to Muril, I hope you have a wonderful day with Miss Nancy.    Re: Debbie/Glen-  a lot of people are bringing my grandmother junk at the nursing home too.   Donuts, candy, wanting to "perk her up", give her treats etc.    I guess they figure she is 82 and has lost so much ground with this last episode that they dont' really care about her weight or her sugar levels.

Jen, sounds like you had a good weekend  :)

Hi Dawn,  I know you'll miss running for a bit, but you'll be back at it before you know it, pushing Sam along in the stroller   :)     No change with Gram, thank you for asking.   She's just like after she first had the stroke, so sad.      No, not really reading anything "great".   Struggling through THE APPEAL (Grisham).   Nice to see him back in the law/courtroom arena, but the whole bad chemical company/buying judges thing is getting old.      Will definitely check out IF I AM DEAD OR MISSING, thank you.    Sad, but I haven't read any really WOW books in a long time.

Dusta, I'm sorry you won't get to leave today.   Where are you headed once you do get on the road?    I just love hearing about all your stops and the things you do!

Jeanne, good to see you.   So sorry to hear that your SIL is still struggling, continuing to send good thoughts out for her and your family.       Congrats on that all time low weight!   I know you won't let getting off track that little bit deter you, you are super tough.

Going to go lay down for a bit, maybe Tim will take pity on me and go get Jake from school for me today.

    Good Morning.

It's sunny here with a high of 42 predicted - not bad.  Smile  Had to go to the dentist this morning for my cleaning - I hate the dentist - lol.  We had a good weekend - I worked with my SIL at the kids school for the "Spring Fling" while it was snowing at windy and 22 degrees - lol, but they had a good turn-out.  It is the big fundraiser of the the year for the PTA.  We had to do the football toss game - I got my exercise chasing footballs - lol.  This year was somewhat bittersweet - our last year at the elementary school.  Megan will be going to the 6th grade academy next year and Isaac will still be at the middle school - 8th grade.  Sigh . . . . where does the time go??  They grow up so fast.  Sad

Jolene - Take care of yourself.  ((Jolene))  Still praying for your grandmother.

Dawn - Sorry about the running Sad  I know you'll miss it but hopefully you will really enjoy the walking.

Jen - Glad you enjoyed the concert - sorry you aren't checking in from Mexico.  Wink

Muril - Enjoy your day with Miss Nancy.  Sounds like you had a fun weekend - sorry about the power outage - funny, stuff like that sure does make you really appreciate electricity.

Jeanne - Still praying for your SIL - so sad.  ((Jeanne)).

Dusta - Sorry you will be delayed a day or so - from what you've said about Mel, I think he might be way too independent for a nursing home - you're right that they conform the residents to their way and not the other way around - doesn't seem right.  Sad

Charlene - Hope you are feeling better.

Waving to all those to come.

Jen  ~  I just heard Jack Johnson's "If I Had Eyes" (is that right?) on xm. very good!

Jolene ~ I've thought the same thing on books, nothing has blown me away lately. I"m not a grisham fan anymore, loved him for a while but like you said, how many times can you read the same thing?  I probably need to get into the library or bookstore & just randomly pulll books off the shelf to read. I do that once in a while - when I feel like I"m reading the same things by the same people. Lately I have been - all my cozy mystery series seem to have come out with new books w/in a few weeks so I"ve read 5-6 of them in a row LOL!!! Then I got into If I Am Dead or Missing, which is heavy... I need some light beach reads or I might fall into a funk LOL!!!

    Hello everyone!

Finally made it through last week! Hope this week is better!!!!

We had two funerals in our church and then we got several inches of snow over the weekend, and dh worked all day Saturday......it was a crazy week! Confused

Jolene I hope your grandmother is doing better, and I hope YOU get feeling better soon too!!!

This is a good topic for me, because of my hormone inbalance, I'm not supossed to eat a lot of sugar, and it does affect my skin! I can tell a big difference, from when I will eat sugar, to when I am eating right. When I eat sugar I get dark patches of skin, and when I eat right it will eventually fade some...

Well I had better get busy! Will be working all day today..... :(

Does anyone read Jodi Picoult books, My Sister's Keeper and others? She is going to be in town Wednesday night promoting her new book and doing a signing and I'm going to get the new book!  My Sister's Keeper is an EXCELLENT book for those of you who like to read.
