    Looking for Camping Recipies

    Hello,

I am looking for some quick and simple camping recipies that can be cooked over an open fire or in a BBQ. Any recipie that you can share would be greatly appreciated. Breakfasts, Lunches, snacks, dinner or desert. Even drinks.

    Thanks so much.

I am an old Girl Scout leader from way back.  Also camped many many years with my family.  One of our favorites was foil bakes. Take double aluminum foil square (about 12" square) and put your meat in the bottom - maybe ground beef, maybe chicken, even a pork chop.  sprinkle with onions - potatoes - carrots.  seal very well and place in camp fire. about 30-40 minutes depending on the heat - you can tell by smell if they are starting to burn -experience is valuable here.  This is great because everyone can do their own thing. - onions or not - peppers or not - maybe some sausage instead of ground beef.

Also - anything that you  make in the crock pot can be made camping - beef stew, chili, etc.  Dig a hole - place hot coals in hole - place pot over coals - cover with plastic so no dirt gets in - cover with dirt and go for the day playing.  When you return you have a slow cooked version of whatever you buried.

There are a lot of great camping recipes out there - it is more a technique than a recipe.  Good luck,

    Janet

My favorite recipe pfor camping is:

    Omelet in A Bag

    For each omelet

    2 Eggs

    1 pint Zip-loc Bag

    Shredded Cheese

    Salt and Pepper to tast

     Meat - I'll explain

Boiling Water - to cook them in

Crack 2 eggs into zip-loc bag.  Rub in palms to break eggs.  Top accross bag with shredded cheese, salt and pepper.  Sprinkle meat of your choice accross the bag top - taco meat is great.  So is cubed ham.

If your making more than one at a time: Take a magic marker and write individual names on them and let them make there own.  Just have bowls of add-ins like the meat, cheese, onion, salt or anything you want.

You put in your omelet what ever you'd like mushrooms, onion anything.  rubbed between hands to mix.  Squeeze air out and close bag.  Slowly put into boiling water (you don't want the hot liquid splashing on you) and cook exactly 13 minutes.  Take out of pot and bag.  Either put on paper plate and eat or have a tortilla and wrap it to go! Easy clean up  and Delish....

Even plain cheese is great! Yum - now  I am hungry Wink....

Be sure and get a pie iron. They now make double ones, but we just have a single one. You can make anything in them from breakfast to lunch and dinner to dessert. Just take a piece of bread, butter it and put the buttered size against the pie iron to brown. You can make breakfast with eggs and meat, lunch with ham and cheese, bologna and onions, etc. and for dessert, put your favorite pie filling in and you will have a toasted pie! They are lucious. I like to make them in the backyard even when we aren't camping! I couldn't live without our pie iron. There are lots of recipies online -- "pie iron recipes" and I know there's a cookbook too.

what a great idea making the omelet in a baggie.    Something I never would of even thought of since I would be thinking the baggie would melt.

    Re: Looking for Camping Recipies

For breakfast I pre-make breakfast burritos at home.  I use eggs, potatoes, onions and sausage. Then I wrap them in foil & freeze them. When I go camping I pack the burritos in a cooler and throw them on the BBQ each morning to heat them up. It works perfect for a 2-3 day camping trip.

For dinner I pre-make chili and then freeze it in ice cube trays. Once frozen I throw the cubes in a large zip lock bag & take them on my camping trip. This way I can decide how much to cook & when.  I usually heat it in a pot over an open fire.

    Here's my chili recipe:

1 lb. ground beef, turkey, chicken, pork, or buffalo
    1/2 cup water
    1 can(14.5 oz)diced tomatoes undrained
1 can kidney, pinto, or black beans
1 chili seasoning packet(I use Amazing Taste for Chili Seasoning)

Brown meat in large skillet on medium heat. Add water, seasoning, tomato, beans, stir well. Bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve if desired with shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream and chopped onions.

Hope you have a great camping trip!
