Sweetened Condensed Milk....

 What's the cost of sweetened condensed milk in your stores?

What brands are there available?

Are there house brands, or is there only the one, major national brand?

I have Western Family brand and it's $2.85.

I've seen sweetened condensed milk at  a little less than $3 a can, depending on brand (Borden's Eagle Brand or Magnolia, etc.) and hope it goes on sale and I might have a coupon.  Lately I've been making my own for recipes and it turns out great.  Check out www.hillbillyhousewife.com and do a search on sweetened condensed milk and click on the topic and you will get the recipe for the equivalent of two cans.  I have adjusted it for one and a half cups (one can) and it worked out fine.

I just wondered, as I see SO many recipes that have expensive ingredients...so expensive that I wouldn't pay to have a professional make me something similar....

I guess people have lots of money to spend on groceries.

You're right!  I pass them by or try to go to the basics or substitute...like the sweeetened condensed milk from scratch.  This does work fine but I find beating with my electric hand mixer works better than with the blender as the mixture gets thick.

I'm a budget cook unless it's a special occasion and even then I don't go into big $$ ingredients.  Not worth it.

Less than a dollar?? Grab it while you see it at Aldi's before the word gets out!!  Regular size can? (14 oz. or so?) Wish our Aldi's were a bit closer.
