I don't usually complain about prices...

And I supposes I'm not really complaining now but I've noticed how everyone has been commenting on the increase in the price of flour.  Well, guess what.  I just had to stock up on flour at Bulk Barn today and the price has tripled since last time I was there!!!  I guess I should (and do) consider myself very fortunate that I can still buy whatever I want/need to buy

On the other hand, all the stores in our area have some good sales this week.  Skinless, boneless chicken breasts @ $2 a lb.  These are big enough that hubby and I will share one and not go hungry.  So I stocked up on them, Italian sausages were also on sale so bought a box of them for less than $10.  All the stores have $1, $2 and $3 sales.  Yogurts were 25c each, eggs for $1.99 and a large carton of OJ was also $1.99.  Another store has Maxwell House instant coffee (that I use for hubby's instant cappucino) for $2 a jar, instead of $4+.  All in all, it was a good day to buy groceries.

Itseems like people who have access to many large supermarkets get better buys than the folks who love out in the country. Where I live in sw ND the nearest Walmart is in a larger town of 20000 and that is 75 mi away (one way).

One of our 2 stores in this town of 1300 has yogurtoin sale (store brand) this week and it is 10 for $5.00, usually 89 cents and name brands are $1.09 for 6 oz. Carots are on sale for $1.29 for a 2 lbs bag, usually $1.69. Wehave had the chicken breasts for $2.00 lbs, they come in 3 lbs bags(frozen).

I don't buy prepared foods so don't know much about prices of those. Have not checked the price of flour because I buy grain and grind my own (with rare exceptions) and I am well stocked up. Grain is easier to store and will keep for years if stored right wheras flour does not last that long and gets stale after a few months and whole wheat flour will go rancid unless refrigerated or frozen.

The town we live in has only 4000 population but we do have national and provincial chain stores - A&P, Sobey's and No frills.  Today I did actually drive to another town as the stores are bigger and do have better selections, even tho' they may be the same chain.  Altogether a drive of about 50 miles.

I get to go to Walmart once a year when I have a ride with frends. Then I stock up for one year on OTCs, babay waipes ansd such. I have never been in their rgocery section since they opened the super store 2 yrs ago. There is another large supermarket that is not a chain, called Dan's and  when comparing their ads with Walmart;'s I think Dan's has better buys.

I buy bulk foods from a health food buying club. I buy whole chickens fro the Hutterite colony 35 mi south of here in SD. They deleiver to the house and many people buy their chickens, they are so much better than what you can get in the store since they grow their own feed and do not feed chemicals  to the chickens. They are also not fat and squeaky clean inside and out. You have to order a month ahead but they do raise batches all summer. I have friends who raise Emus and can some of that meat when they butcher, it is much like beef and very lean.

Since I am alone I don't see any need to go all over the place just to see a few more brands of whatever. If I do need something I relly can't get here I have friends who go once a months and bring me what I can't get here, little treats like a wedge of Brie cheese or a couple of nice avocadoes (our stores do not get the best quality  of some produce).

Tasty, thanks for the heads-up about the flour prices at Bulk Barn. I often stop there on the the way from here to there, to grab a little of this or that, and often a special flour, such as spelt. I've not been there in awhile, though. I'll watch that price.

While on the topic of Bulk Bran, I noticed that powdered soy milk is 22 cents/100g and powdered milk is $1.48/100g.....I think I'll be buying and using the soy a LOT more often, for use in baking.

I may have to give the soy milk a try.  I must admit I have never used it - I'm sure in baking I wouldn't tell the difference.

I do like getting in to Bulk Barn.  I like being able to buy herbs and spices without spending an arm and a leg.  I also appreciate being able to buy the quantity of dried fruit, etc that I want Unfortunately my nearest one is about 40 kilometres away so I try to plan my trips there and make the best use I can of it.
