HL topic of the week 4/28 to 5/4 Healthy Foods for Glowing Skin!

    Good Monday Morning Healthy Ones!

I am filling in for Miss Jolene this morning- hope you are doing well Jolene!  I thought I would keep the topic lite today. :)

I have to head out early toay to Miss Nancy's. We are getting some much needed rain-it's been raining off and on the past few days but since we are still low for this time of year- we need it! Hope poor DH gets to mow before it is knee high though.lol

We had a nice supper with Ryan and Crystal last night and sent a lot of the manicotti home with them and left some for Clay to reheat when he got home from work last night!

LOL Betsy on me passing up dessert- only because I forgot! :)

Have a lovely day and I appreciate all who keep the post going while I am gone today! Chat away! :)

    Hugs,

    ~Muril~

Foods That Make Your Skin Glow

Top skin creams average about $400 per ounce (and you thought gas was expensive!), yet most offer little proof that they do half of what they promise. Want to save a bundle and improve your skin? Load your shopping cart with nutrients that have been shown to possess skin-hydrating, sun-protecting, and even wrinkle-preventing powers, says Manhattan dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD. Here’s her grocery list of the best foods for your skin:

    Firm and Bright
You’re probably up to your eyebrows (Botoxed or not) with the mantra “eat more fruits and vegetables.” But if you’ve yet to take that advice to heart, maybe knowing that they prevent wrinkles will do the trick.

The skin doc’s three top picks: sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and cantaloupe.

What they do: Replenish your skin’s supply of antioxidants, so they're ready to scarf up free radicals whenever they make an appearance. Free rads are highly reactive oxygen molecules that damage cells and contribute to just about everything that can go wrong with skin, from dryness to wrinkles.

    Fresh and Juicy
Your body can’t store much wrinkle-fighting vitamin C, so you need to top up your supplies regularly. The easiest way: Have some citrus every day.

The skin doc’s four top picks: oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit.

Ounce for ounce, oranges are the top citrus source of C, but you can only eat so many, right? For variety, make lemonade; squeeze limes on melon; add grapefruit to salad; and, instead of drinking soda, fizz OJ with sparkling water. It all adds up.

What they do: Keep skin’s vitamin C levels high. While C is a nifty antioxidant, that’s not the key reason it’s here. It helps keep collagen -- the supportive protein fibers that stop skin from sagging -- strong and resilient. (Flimsy collagen means lines and wrinkles.) Since collagen breakdown really picks up in your mid-30s, eat citrus early and often to head off aging.

    Smoothing and Soothing
There’s a particularly potent antioxidant known as EGCG that does all kinds of good things for skin. The best place to find it? True teas: black, green, or white (not herbal). Brew a full teapot every morning so that sipping 4 to 6 cups throughout the day is a no-brainer.

    The skin doc’s #1 pick::green tea.

While all true teas contain EGCG (by the way, that stands for epigallocatechin-3-gallate), the various types of green tea have the most. Dr. Wechsler’s personal favorite is hojicha green tea (available at http://www.adagio.com/). “The roasting process that turns this green tea a brownish color also lowers its caffeine content,” she says -- handy if you’re caffeine sensitive or it’s one of those days when you don’t need another stimulant.

What it does: Gives your skin a healthy dose of EGCG, which is a great multitasker. EGCG puts a damper on inflammatory chemicals involved in acne and sun-related skin aging, it helps prevent skin cancer; and it has a lion-tamer effect on tumor cells. What’s more, green tea contains L-theanine, a de-tensing amino acid -- and anything you can do to stanch the flow of the stress hormone cortisol helps keep collagen fibers intact.

    Dark and Green
Certain dark green vegetables, whether they’re fresh, frozen, raw, or steamed, really deliver on vitamin A, one of the most skin-essential vitamins going.

The skin doc’s three top picks: spinach, turnip greens, and broccoli.

What they do:Deliver a hefty supply of vitamin A, which supports skin-cell turnover, the process that keeps cell growth and development humming along flawlessly. Without enough A, skin becomes dry, tough, and scaly.

    Fish Faves
Several cold-water catches give your skin a double benefit: age-fighting omega-3 fatty acids and the restorative powers of protein.

The skin doc’s seven top picks: salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, Atlantic mackerel, Pacific herring, and most shellfish.

Just don’t, uh, go overboard. As good as omega-3s are for skin (and the rest of you, too), worries about the amount of mercury in many fish mean it’s smart to limit seafood or freshwater fish to two meals a week. That’s a must for young children and for women who are pregnant, who may become pregnant, or who are nursing. (Go here for the government’s fish guidelines)

What they do: Omega-3s fight inflammation, now considered one of the top skin agers, and they also help protect against sunburn, enhancing the effects of your sunscreen’s SPF. Protein is required to build and repair skin cells and to make enzymes and hormones that help keep it glowing.

Fill your grocery cart with all of these foods and you won’t just look younger, you’ll be younger. Eating at least one serving of fish a week and getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements lowers your biological age. In fact, the antioxidants alone can make your RealAge up to 6 years younger.

Good morning. Good topic Muril. I eat fish, veggies and a fruit with vitamin c. I have a kiwi once in a while, don't like it as much as oranges, but it is a nice change. The thing I don't do is drink that much green tea, might have 1 a day, but I get tired of it real fast.

Suppose to leave here today, looks like it is going to be pretty. I won't be able to get on and you never know if where we stay tonight if they will have wifi. So hope you all have a great day and hi to everyone to come later.

     Good Morning~!!

Muril - great article. I eat a lot of the things listed, just didn't realize they would help my skin too Big Smile   I love the added benefits!

Hi Jet! Hope you had a nice weekend

Dusta - have a safe travel day!

    Jolene - (((hugs))).

Jen - how did the bachlorette party go? any word on the house & how the open house went for them?

We had a nice weekend - got a lot of much-needed rain on & off all weekend. Lost power saturday night for a few hours - really bad storm came through. We were able to get out to the park saturday & sunday, which was nice. The temps were in the 80's.

did some cooking & freezing this weekend, trying to get the freezer full with a few things. I made a batch of chili, lasagna and beef stew. Also put some chicken in marinades & froze those uncooked.

Also made a 3 Bean Salad, which I didn't freeze but it's DH's favorite. I have some of that for lunch today. This time I cut the amount of sugar down in the dressing, didn't taste bad but dh says it's not the same *sigh*. We need to cut some sugar out of our diet and I just won't be able to make this much if I have to do it w/ the full amount. Oh well. We'll enjoy it more if it's a treat, right?!? LOL!!!   Here is the recipe:

    3 Bean Salad

    1/2 c. Cider Vinegar

    1/2 c. Vegetable Oil

    1/2 c. White Sugar (I used 1/4c this time)

    1 tsp. Celery Seed

1/2 tsp. Salt (I use kosher)

    Fresh Ground Black Pepper

Combine in a small sauce pan, cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar disolves & mixture starts to boil/simmer. About 4-5 minutes.

In a large non-reactive bowl (no metal) combine the following:

15 oz. can Cut Wax Beans, drained

15 oz. can Cut Green Beans, drained

15 oz. can Kidney Beans, drained & rinsed

1 small Red Onion, sliced thin & rings separated

(at super target I found cans of green & wax beans already mixed in 15 ozx cans so I used two of those)

Pour dressing over beans, stir well. Let sit for 30 minutes to cool. Cover and refrigerate for 6-24 hours (the longer it sits the better it tastes!!). Serve with a slotted spoon

Never give up what you want most for what you can have now.

Re: HL topic of the week 4/28 to 5/4 Healthy Foods for Glowing Skin!

Good morning.  Had a busy Saturday with chores and all, but Sunday I laid around like a slug.  I picked away at food most of the day, but didn't do any serious damage!

Jen, your big day is right around the corner!  Glad you had a fun time at your party.  I remember partying like that (dim memory).  Now, one or two drinks and I'm ready for a nap.  Not quite the party girl I used to be!

Dawn, I think we're scheduled for your rain this week.  We really need it, the fire danger is at "severe".  Hundreds of woods fires, particularly in Massachusetts.  It's really quite cool and damp, but at least it's not snowing!

Muril, thanks for the post.  Let me add.....moisturizer and sunscreen.  And of course you know...plenty of water!  Luckily, I eat all the foods on your list.

Hi, Dusta.  Didn't get the entire camper cleaned out, Sunday was too cool, so I decided to wait another week.  I did do all the dishes and kitchen gadgets, though.  It won't take me long to wipe everything down and wash the floor.  DH will wash and wax the outside.

Hi, Jet.  How was your weekend?

(((Jolene))).  If you swing by today, know that we're thinking about you Angel

I am taking an online class, and we have been assigned a group project.  After four emails and several attachments to my one group member, I get an email that he's in FL on vacation.  An assignment due yesterday he left undone, so I emailed it in with only my work attached.  That kind of inattention really frosts my @ss.  I let the instructor know that I was not impressed.  Grrrr.

Back to work.  I've been cracking the whip lately around here, and people are busily working away!

    PammieJ.

God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind that I will never die.

Hi Dawn! We haven't heard how the open house went. We are just going to chill on it at least until this whole wedding/honeymoon hubbub is out of the way! Then we can really sit down and look at our budget and our options!

Pam I can't believe I use to party like that every weekend! I seriously did nothing yesterday!

We redistributed our numbers here at work since one girl is leaving. I ended up with 16 and everyone else has 13. Confused I don't wny they don't just change my name to pack mule!! LOL!!

We are still here in MS. The steps won't go up and can't go down the highway like that. They are the kind that when you start the motor they are suppose to go up. Mel called the company and they said check the fuse they are good. Trying to find someone to come here. I am really ready to go home. Jen I am in a whine mode.

Dawn try 1 tlbs less each time you make the salad or maybe every other time.

For my bouquet (she said she was going to use 2 dozen lilies) and one small memorial vase was going to be $310!!! I told her to go ahead and scale back the amount of flowers she is using!! I'm a prude! I can not wait for this all to be done so I can quit spending money!!!

    Hi All!

Well, Miss Nancy is feeling just awful today! Sad She was so out of it and kindof confused as well. I talked to her son on the phone and we decided she needed to see a Dr.  It took her about an hour to take her morning meds- she only ate about 3 bites of B'fast and even less lunch.:(  I think the same thing is bothering her that happened in Feb. with her salivary gland being infected. It is swolen on her left jaw again. Anyway, I got her to the Dr.by 2:30 for her appt. and her son met us there and I left when the Dr. called her in.  I went back to the appt. and ordered her supper from the dining room- maybe she will eat something. I ordered a lot of different things so something may strike her fancy.

DH has an appt. for an Xray and a Cat scan this evening so we are off in a few minutes. We may just get a salad at McD's on the way home for supper. If I can't think of anywhere else that is healthy and don't cost an arm and a leg.lol

Dusta, did you get to go home today? Sorry about the steps on the camper. Bummer. :( IT was pouring the rain this morning and I was so glad because it washed the polen off my car. :)

Jen, Thank you so much for my thank you gift! I love it and will use it for my water bottle(BIG SURPISE THERE!)  Will think of you all the time since I drink a lot of water! :)You are the sweetest thing!

Dawn, Yeah on eating all these healthy veggies. I upped my fruits today- took a cup of grapes for a snack.   I took carrot and celery sticks too but never got around to eating them. :(   I had a tossed salad topped with grilled chicken for lunch today.

Pam, our flowers are really doing well- seemed like they popped up overnight in the flower garden. Thanks to the APRIL showers! :)  How is yours coming along?

    Jet, keep on glowing! :)

    Off to the Dr.'s office!

    Hugs to all!

We are still in MS and it is sunny and beautiful, my bike is hanging on the back of the motorhome.

The only man that could check the steps isn't going to be able to get here until Wednesday. Mel had me go to the office and ask if anyone could take out something on the steps to disable them so he could tie them up and we can leave tomorrow. Two men came and one of them did that, wouldn't let Mel pay him and he didn't want him to do it for nothing.

Jen, called dh this afternoon and he said you have something from someone named Jen, then he spelled your last name. I said well open it, he spelled Dustin, I guess because my Daddy's was "an" instead of "in". Don't know what it looks like, but it was sweet of you.

    Good night and sweet dreams.

     Morning!

Jen ~ Thank You!!!!!!!!  I love it - dh got the mail & was like "who's jen in Iowa?" I said "she's on HL", then he knew who you were :-)  You are so sweet to think of us when you have so muh going on (((hugs)))  sorry about the florist - I swear, if something says 'wedding' or 'baby' they charge an extra $50. Seems like anyway. I know those things take time & talent, but that seems pricey (to me).

Muril - hope Miss Nancy will be ok, will be thinking about her.  I love to snack on raw veggies, always have them in my lunch & in the fridge (at home & work).  did you get the severe weather last night?

Dusta - hope you can travel today :-)

Hi Jet & Pammie!  and anyone I missed Big Smile

We had more rain last night.  We need it, and it's been regular the last few weeks. Noticed the ants are starting to look for higher/dry homes - lots of ant hills in the yard and I"m finding them in the garage. I had a new chili recipe in the crockpot yesterday, turned out ok. Not great so I won't post it. Haven't decided if I'll tweak it or toss it.

Hope everyone has a good day!

    Good morning!!

I can't believe you guys got them already, I threw them in the mail Saturday! Hopefully I didn't forget anyone! LOL!

Made an awesome new recipe last night. Instead of beef dip we made pork dip sandwhiches. It was so easy too! I sprinkled a pork loin with garlic powder, salt and pepper and grilled it. The au jus was some carrots, onions, and celery sauted in olive oil and then you add a can of chicken broth, a can of beef broth, a T of tomato paste and a bay leaf. Simmer that while the pork is cooking. Grill some bread, drain the au jus and slice the pork and add it to the juice. We added the drained veggies on top of the sammies and then had a side of juice to dip in! So good! I always get nervous when I cook pork so I'm always excited when it comes out!!

It's hopefully suppose to be warmer today. We were in a freeze warning last night. If it snows or is super cold on my wedding day you'll be able to hear me scream! LOL!

    Waving to all!
    Jen
